White tigers are exceedingly rare in the wild, and their coveted fur has led to aggressive breeding programs that prioritize appearance over health. But here’s the catch: cats, like most animals, cannot develop Down syndrome. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, and Down syndrome occurs when there’s an extra copy of chromosome 21. Cats, however, have only 19 pairs of chromosomes, and their genetic makeup is too different from humans’ to produce the same condition. Otto’s unusual facial features were likely due to a genetic mutation or hormone deficiency, but no definitive cause was ever confirmed. Labeling him as a “Down syndrome kitten” was not only inaccurate but also a disservice to his story and the complexities of animal genetics.
