The Boger Swing, also known as the “Bogerschaukel,” was one of the most brutal torture methods employed in Auschwitz during World War II, invented by SS officer Wilhelm Boger, nicknamed the “Tiger of Auschwitz” for his sadistic interrogations. This device involved suspending prisoners in a painful, exposed position on an iron bar, swinging them while subjecting them to severe beatings, often leading to death or permanent injury. Used primarily in the camp’s Political Department (Gestapo section) for “enhanced interrogations,” it exemplified the systematic cruelty in Nazi camps, where over 1.1 million perished at Auschwitz alone.

Boger, a key perpetrator, faced justice in the 1963–1965 Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials, where survivors like Paul Leo Seidel demonstrated the device, leading to his life sentence for multiple murders. This “torture swing” highlighted the dehumanization in concentration camps, blending physical agony with psychological terror. Examining it objectively reveals the mechanics of Nazi brutality, the role of individual perpetrators, and the importance of survivor testimonies in post-war justice, underscoring lessons on human rights and preventing state-sanctioned violence.

Wilhelm Friedrich Boger was born on December 19, 1906, in Stuttgart, Germany, to a merchant father. After commercial apprenticeship, he joined far-right groups like the NSDAP (1930) and SS (1930), rising in the Gestapo. By 1942, wounded on the Eastern Front, he was transferred to Auschwitz as an SS-Oberscharführer in the Political Department, overseeing interrogations and escapes. Prisoners feared him as the “Tiger” or “Beast of Auschwitz” for his arbitrary shootings and inventive tortures.

The Boger Swing was his signature device: a one-meter iron bar suspended by chains from the ceiling in Block 11’s interrogation room. Victims were stripped naked, bent over the bar with wrists manacled to ankles (head down, genitals exposed), then swung in arcs while Boger or guards beat them with clubs, whips, or bottles—targeting sensitive areas like the head, back, and groin. Interrogations lasted until confessions or death; Boger claimed it had the lowest escape rate. Similar to later “pau de arara” in Brazil, it caused excruciating pain, internal injuries, and often fatalities.

Used from 1942–1945 on political prisoners, Jews, and others, it was part of Auschwitz’s terror system. Survivors testified at trials: Paul Leo Seidel demonstrated it in 1964 Frankfurt proceedings, where Boger denied killings but admitted the device. Convicted of at least 114 murders, Boger received life imprisonment, dying in prison in 1977.

This method’s brutality lay in prolonged suffering—swinging amplified blows—making it one of Auschwitz’s most feared tortures.

The Boger Swing’s invention and use epitomize WWII’s darkest cruelties, a device turning interrogation into sadistic torment under Boger’s command. Its legacy in survivor testimonies and trials reminds us of individual roles in systemic evil. By reflecting objectively, we honor victims and confront how ordinary people enable atrocities, reinforcing human rights imperatives. This history urges vigilance against dehumanization, fostering societies that prioritize empathy and justice to prevent such horrors.
