The beast was also seen flipping a scooter and smashing into the wall of a nearby house as it wreaked havoc for two hours while police and locals attempted to calm it down.
One victim has been identified as Vishnu, 40, a native of the city of Kollam, who drove the animal to the temple.
He was trampled to death when the elephant freaked out while he was trying to take a photo of an injury on its tusk to share with the owner.
The animal remained near Vishnu’s body for a long time, threatening anyone who tried to come close, preventing any medical assistance.

Another man was also wounded in the chaos called Pradeep, who is now receiving treatment in hospital.
The carnage happened in the area of Angamaly, Kerala, on Friday.
The elephant had been transported to the Kidangoor Mahavishnu Hindu Temple for blessings during a celebration.
Shortly after arrival, it broke free from its chains and went on a rampage, forcing police, wildlife officials and an elephant squad to intervene.
The animal was eventually subdued with tranquilliser darts and secured to a coconut tree near the shrine.
A similar incident happened in Koodalmanikyam Temple in the town of Irinjalakuda, in Kerala, on the same day during festival-related activities.
A 25-year-old assistant handler named Sreekuttan was trampled to death by his elephant.
He had sustained severe chest pains, while the head handler was injured and is now receiving treatment.
The same elephant had turned aggressive during a procession the day before, attacking two people.
While the animal had been restrained in the Devaswom compound, it broke through a temporary shed and attacked its handlers.
Sreekuttan died on the way to the hospital due to the severity of his wounds.
