The incident, which occurred on a busy Sunday afternoon at Piedade Beach in Recife, has once again thrust the region’s long-standing shark problem into the spotlight.
The boy was swimming with his uncle, Aldemir Jose, and two other children when the predator struck around 1:40 pm. Moments earlier, Aldemir had left the water, leaving the children playing in the sea. He recalled the terrifying moment with visible emotion: “We were all in the sea before the attack and I had just left the water and left the kids in the sea. Then I heard a strange noise and when I turned round all I could see was blood. I didn’t think twice and raced into the water to get my nephew out.”
The child suffered severe wounds to his left hand, hip, and leg. Horrifying footage captured by bystanders shows panicked beachgoers dragging the boy from the water and laying him on the sand as a crowd of terrified onlookers gathered around. The boy remained conscious throughout the ordeal, reportedly begging his uncle not to let him die.
Lifeguards provided immediate first aid before paramedics from the Mobile Emergency Care Service took over. The boy was initially rushed to the Aeronautics Hospital and later transferred to the larger Hospital da Restauracao in central Recife, where he underwent emergency surgery. According to local media, he is now conscious and in stable condition.

Piedade Beach lies in Jaboatao dos Guararapes, part of the Recife metropolitan area on Brazil’s northeastern coast. Historical data paints a grim picture: this latest attack marks the 83rd recorded shark incident in Pernambuco state since monitoring began in 1992. Piedade Beach alone accounts for 24 of those incidents.
The 2026 attack is already the third shark-related incident in the state this year. Tragically, it follows the death of a 13-year-old boy at nearby Del Chifre Beach in Olinda earlier in the year. In March 2023, a 14-year-old lost a leg and a 15-year-old lost an arm in separate attacks at Piedade within two days of each other.

One recent review noted: “A very cool beach, unfortunately inappropriate for bathing because it is quite dangerous due to the attacks of sharks, but worth the walk.” Another visitor advised renting a car to reach safer beaches 50 to 100 kilometers away.
