In a harrowing encounter captured on video, California spearfisher Tyler McQuillen fought off a massive 12-foot great white shark after it attacked him in the waters off Refugio State Beach in Santa Barbara.
The dramatic incident occurred on September 1st at Refugio Point, where McQuillen was diving when the predator struck. What began as a routine spearfishing outing quickly turned into a life-or-death struggle, all recorded on his GoPro camera.

According to McQuillen, the attack started with a sudden impact from behind. “I was diving off the coast of Santa Barbara at Refugio Point when I was hit in the back,” he recalled. “I thought it was my friends playing a joke on me.”
That initial contact was anything but playful. The great white made an exploratory lunge, biting his toes and tearing off one of his flippers. Blood began to spread into the water as the shark circled for a second pass.

In the heart-stopping footage, McQuillen can be seen dropping his speargun in the chaos but quickly retrieving it. As the shark returned, he first used his bare hand to push the animal away in an extraordinary display of composure. When the shark circled for a third time, he jabbed it with his speargun, successfully driving it off.
The college student then faced several tense minutes swimming back to shore, unsure of the extent of his injuries. “I saw blood around me and wasn’t sure where it was from, so I swam as fast as I could back to shore,” he said.

McQuillen later discovered he had suffered a laceration on his right foot from the initial bite, which also broke two of his toes.
The footage shows the shark methodically circling its target — classic predatory behavior — before committing to the strikes. Great whites are known for such investigative approaches, often testing potential prey with a first bite before deciding whether to pursue.

McQuillen’s quick thinking and calm under extreme pressure were likely decisive factors in his survival. By maintaining possession of his speargun and using it effectively as a deterrent, he turned a potential tragedy into a remarkable survival story.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks involved in spearfishing in shark-prone waters along the California coast. While encounters like this remain relatively rare, they highlight the importance of preparedness, situational awareness, and respect for the ocean’s apex predators.
Tyler McQuillen survived what could have been a fatal encounter, thanks to his presence of mind and a healthy dose of luck. His GoPro footage now stands as both a cautionary record and a testament to human resilience in the face of nature’s most formidable hunters.
