Over the past week, GPS data revealed a release of deep internal pressure, while tiltmeters—sensitive instruments that detect the slightest shifts in the Earth’s surface—picked up signs of magma pushing upward, creating shallow pressure beneath the volcano. Even an hour after Monday’s explosive eruption, that pressure persisted. Earthquake data and visual reports later in the day confirmed additional eruptions, signaling that magma is still surging toward the surface. This volcano, it seems, is far from finished.

For now, the surrounding communities are on high alert. Authorities have urged residents to stay at least 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) away from the eruption’s epicenter, to wear masks to protect against falling ash, and to brace for potential volcanic mudflows, or lahars, if heavy rains sweep through. Miraculously, no casualties have been reported from this latest eruption, but the region remains on edge, knowing the volcano’s next move is anything but certain.
