“You Can’t Stay Here for More Than 16 Hours”: The Terrifying Science of Everest’s Death Zone

What Is the Death Zone on Mount Everest, and Why Did a Missing Climber Survive for 6 Days?

A Sherpa guide in Nepal was recently found alive after being lost for 6 days on Mount Everest. The international press has called this a “miracle” because the area where he disappeared is near the “Death Zone” – one of the most extreme environments on Earth that humans can enter.

Sherpa Went Missing While Guiding on Everest

According to Nepal’s Kathmandu Post and ABC News, the guide – Hillary Dawa, 52 – had been missing since May 29, after separating from his client, a Polish climber.

Dawa was last seen (before disappearing) at an altitude of approximately 7,200 meters, near the area known as the Death Zone.

What Is the Death Zone on Everest?

The “Death Zone” refers to areas above approximately 8,000 meters above sea level. It has this terrifying name because it is where the human body struggles to acclimatize to the altitude.

At this altitude:

Atmospheric pressure is extremely low, with oxygen levels at only about one-third of those at sea level.

Humans cannot survive for more than a few hours without supplemental oxygen.

Winds are very strong, temperatures can drop to -40°C, and sudden blizzards can occur.

The Death Zone does not allow anyone to recover or rest; the longer you stay, the weaker your body becomes (dehydration, hypothermia, impaired judgment…). It is a place where even small mistakes can cost you your life.

So, after several days of Dawa being missing, his family had already begun preparing for a funeral, believing he had no chance of survival.

Why Did This Sherpa Survive?

Dawa recounted that he ate food left behind by other climbers. He also said he had fallen into a snow hole and become trapped, and that finding his way out was extremely difficult because the ladders and fixed ropes had been removed.

Many survival experts believe that a major reason for Dawa’s survival was his climbing experience and his body’s acclimatization to high altitude.

Factors that helped Dawa survive:

Everest Remains a High-Risk Environment

Everest is the highest peak in the world. The freezing cold, lack of oxygen, and rapidly changing weather make it a place of constant risk, even for experienced guides.

Dawa’s survival after being lost for several days is considered an extremely rare event – remarkable even for mountaineers and high-altitude medical experts – and one of the most incredible survival stories in Everest’s history.

Hillary Dawa’s survival story is a reminder of Everest’s harshness, but also a testament to the power of experience, adaptation, and human will to survive.

Still, not everyone is as fortunate as him. The Death Zone remains one of the most dangerous places on Earth, and every climbing season, it reminds us of human fragility in the face of nature’s power.
