A network of 35 ancient villages, meticulously arranged to mirror the cosmos, has emerged from the soil of Brazil’s Acre state, offering a tantalizing glimpse into a pre-Columbian civilization that thrived centuries before European explorers set foot in the New World. These settlements, dubbed “mound villages,” reveal a society of remarkable ingenuity, with their layouts resembling the face of a clock, the rays of the sun, or even the constellations above.

According to a groundbreaking study published in the Journal of Computer Applications in Archaeology, these villages were engineered as early as the 14th century by cultures that sculpted the Amazon’s southern rim into vibrant, interconnected communities. From above, the villages’ elongated earthen mounds radiate outward from central plazas, forming circular or rectangular patterns that evoke celestial imagery. The researchers have affectionately nicknamed these formations “Sóis,” the Portuguese word for “suns,” due to their striking resemblance to solar rays when viewed from the sky.

The discovery marks the first time such mound villages have been identified in Acre, a region long obscured by the Amazon’s thick vegetation. Of the 35 villages uncovered, 25 are circular, with an average diameter of 282 feet, while 11 form rectangles averaging 148 feet in length. Another 15 were too poorly preserved to classify, their shapes eroded by time. Yet, what sets these settlements apart is their intentional connectivity. Wide, straight roads—some as broad as 20 feet—link the villages, forming a sprawling network that suggests a highly organized social structure. By attaching a LIDAR sensor to a helicopter, the team peered through the Amazon’s dense canopy, capturing detailed blueprints of the landscape below. “LIDAR provides a new opportunity to locate and document earthen sites in forested parts of Amazonia characterized by dense vegetation,” said lead author Jose Iriarte from the University of Exeter. “It can also document the smallest surficial earthen features in the recently opened pasture areas.” This innovative approach revealed not just individual mounds, but an intricate regional pattern previously unnoticed by archaeologists.

In the 18th century, Colonel Antonio Pires de Campos wrote of a vast Indigenous population living in villages linked by “straight, wide roads that were constantly kept clean.” These early observations, once dismissed as anecdotal, now find validation in the LIDAR scans that reveal the scope of this interconnected network.
Until recently, archaeological efforts in the Amazon focused on excavating single mounds, leaving the broader pattern of these settlements unexplored. This study shifts the lens, offering a regional perspective that highlights the sophistication of these pre-Columbian societies. The mound villages were not isolated outposts but part of a dynamic, interconnected system—a testament to the ingenuity of their builders.
