The group first noticed violent thrashing in the water, a chaotic swirl of foam and fury. As they drew closer, the source became clear—a massive fur seal was locked in a brutal struggle with an octopus, likely dragged from the ocean’s depths to become the predator’s next meal. The kayakers watched, spellbound, as the octopus writhed and twisted, its tentacles flailing in a desperate bid for freedom. But the seal was relentless, tearing at its prey with ferocious determination.
“It was like watching a gladiator match unfold in the ocean,” Stapley said, describing the grisly encounter. “The octopus fought hard, but this time, the seal was just too strong.” Despite the cephalopod’s valiant efforts, it was no match for the seal’s raw power. Chunks of octopus occasionally flew through the air, some landing unnervingly close to the kayaks, a stark reminder of the wildness of the scene.
Matt Foy, owner of Kaikoura Kayaks, noted that such clashes are not uncommon in these waters. “We’ve seen these battles before,” he said. “They can last up to 20 minutes, with the octopus sometimes slipping away. But this one didn’t make it.” The seal claimed its hard-won prize, leaving the kayakers in awe of the raw drama they’d witnessed.
