The Dark Reason The German Guillotine Was Better Than The French Guillotine
One of the most ruthless and efficient execution devices used throughout history was the guillotine, but different countries adapted their guillotines and made changes. Inside Germany, the Fallbeil as it was known was smaller and more compact, and it is accepted that this guillotine was more reliable and effective than the original French guillotine. But why was this?
This article examines the engineering, design, and historical evolution that made the German Fallbeil a superior and more reliable execution device than its French predecessor.
1. A Different Design Philosophy

The French guillotine of 1792 was largely a wooden machine, heavy and requiring disassembly for transport . In contrast, German engineers, starting with clockmaker Johann Mannhardt in 1854, moved toward a more modern, industrial design .
This shift in philosophy was driven by a need for greater reliability, standardization, and efficiency. The Mannhardt design was the first all-metal guillotine, with only the wooden bench remaining . This made it more durable and consistent in operation.
2. The Mannhardt and Tegel Innovations
The Mannhardt Fallbeil was adopted in several German states and represented a clear departure from the French design. Key innovations included:
All-metal construction for durability.
A heavy, U-shaped sledge that guided the blade more smoothly .
The blade release mechanism was redesigned for greater reliability .
When the Nazi regime standardized executions under the 1938 justice ministry decree, they selected the Mannhardt machines as the only reusable models, retiring the older wooden French-style devices . New machines, built by inmates at Tegel Prison in Berlin, were even more efficient, replacing the hinged bench with a fixed table and adding a geared winch to reduce the force required to raise the blade . The Nazi regime, which had previously found the axe too “barbaric” for a modern state, sought a fast and efficient method .
3. Superior Engineering and Practicality

The Fallbeil’s superiority lay in its design refinements:
Compactness: The Tegel Fallbeil was approximately 8 feet tall, short enough to be used inside prison rooms . The French machine was taller and more cumbersome.
Weight: The French guillotine was heavy (around 500 kg), while the German Fallbeil was lighter (about 300 kg), making it easier to transport and assemble .
Standardization: Starting in 1936, the Reich Ministry of Justice decreed that all executions in Germany would be carried out by the Fallbeil. Eleven prisons were designated as Central Execution Sites, ensuring a uniform, efficient process .
This standardization and focus on a “better guillotine” through a prominent Technical Institute in Berlin led to the “Tegels,” which were built in large numbers .
4. Efficiency and Infamy
The Fallbeil’s efficiency is demonstrated by its widespread use. The Nazis established at least 16 execution sites by 1942 . The machine could be operated rapidly—in some cases, executions were carried out every three minutes .
The Fallbeil used in the Katowice prison, nicknamed “the Red Widow,” executed over 550 people accused of resistance between 1941 and 1945 . The machine at Pankrác Prison in Prague was used to execute thousands of the Nazi regime’s opponents . This brutal efficiency was part of the regime’s goal of standardizing judicial murder on a massive scale.
5. The Legacy of the Fallbeil

The Fallbeil remains a chilling symbol of the Nazi regime’s industrial approach to murder. While the French guillotine is often remembered in the context of the French Revolution, the Fallbeil was more efficient, reliable, and standardized. It was an execution machine built to process victims with mechanical precision.
The German engineers succeeded in their goal of creating a superior guillotine—superior in its ability to kill quickly and repeatedly. Its legacy is one of efficiency, standardization, and the dark triumph of engineering over human compassion.
