In the volcanic islands of Guadeloupe, where acidic soil has long erased almost every trace of the deep past, archaeologists have made an extraordinary discovery: 113 carefully arranged pre-Columbian skeletons that survived for centuries against the odds. The remains, dated to the Late Ceramic Age between the 11th and 13th centuries, represent the largest collection of ancient human burials ever recovered in the French overseas department—and they may finally allow scientists to reconstruct the genetic history of the Taino people, the Indigenous Caribbean culture largely destroyed after Christopher Columbus’s arrival in 1492.

The find came during routine preventive excavations ahead of a planned housing development near Les Abymes on Grande-Terre, Guadeloupe’s most populous island. Officials called in the National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP) to survey the site. What the team uncovered defied expectations. In soil so corrosive that organic material rarely survives more than a few centuries, they found dozens of intact or partially intact skeletons, many of them children as well as adults.

The secret to their preservation lay in how the dead were buried. Bodies had been tightly flexed and folded—arms bent across the abdomen or chest, legs compressed against the forearms, elbows, or torso—and often secured with ties or placed in bags. Many were interred in a semi-seated position. This compact arrangement limited the soil’s ability to attack the bone, allowing the remains to endure where others had long since dissolved. Post-burial manipulations of the bodies were also evident, offering rare clues to Taino funerary practices.

Alongside the graves, excavators documented hundreds of post holes marking the locations of former wooden structures and more than 50 pits filled with domestic refuse. These contained pottery sherds, stone tools, heated stones, and the bones of rodents, reptiles, birds, crabs, and shellfish—evidence of everyday life in a settled agricultural community. The scale of the settlement and the sheer number of burials mark the site as exceptional for the Lesser Antilles.
The people interred here belonged to the Arawak cultural tradition that occupied the Caribbean during the Late Ceramic Age, named for its distinctive pottery styles that flourished between roughly 750 and 1500 CE. The island groups of this tradition are commonly identified as the Taino. They lived as peaceful farmers, hunters, and fishers in small villages, sharing resources and maintaining complex social networks across the archipelago. Their world ended abruptly after 1492. Columbus’s expeditions brought violence, disease, and enslavement that devastated Taino populations within a generation. Survivors were few, and much of their material culture and oral history was lost.

Until now, knowledge of the Taino has rested largely on ethnohistoric accounts, rock art, and scattered artifacts. Intact skeletal remains have been vanishingly rare in Guadeloupe’s acidic volcanic soils. The new assemblage changes that equation. Because many of the bones remain well preserved, researchers hope to extract usable DNA. Successful genetic analysis could map kinship relationships within the cemetery, clarify burial customs, and link these individuals to modern descendant communities or to other ancient Caribbean populations. It may also illuminate broader patterns of migration between South America and the islands in the centuries before European contact.
West of the pre-Columbian graves, the same excavation revealed nearly 200 colonial-era features, including post-built structures, a masonry building, and molasses pots associated with sugar production. On any other day those findings would have dominated headlines. Here they serve as a reminder of the layered history of the islands—Indigenous, colonial, and modern—now intersecting at a single construction site.
The discovery underscores both the fragility of the archaeological record in the volcanic Caribbean and the value of preventive archaeology. Without the requirement that the housing project undergo investigation, these 113 individuals would have been destroyed unnoticed. Instead, they offer a rare opportunity to recover the biological and cultural history of a people whose story was nearly erased. If DNA extraction succeeds, the tightly folded skeletons of Grande-Terre may help rewrite the genetic map of the Taino and restore a measure of presence to a lost Caribbean civilization.
