The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to reshape their organization under new general manager John Chayka, and their latest addition has inevitably sparked conversation across the hockey world. The club has hired Andy O’Brien, longtime personal trainer to Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, to lead their Sports Performance Department. The move comes on the heels of another major change: the hiring of Jim Hiller as head coach to replace Craig Berube.
O’Brien’s arrival marks another clean break in a busy offseason for the Maple Leafs. His reputation for helping elite players maximize longevity, most notably Crosby, immediately raised questions about whether the hire could somehow influence the Penguins star’s future. Longtime NHL insider Pierre McGuire addressed those questions directly while appearing on Toronto Sports Rush with Kyle Andrew, offering both praise for the appointment and a clear assessment of Crosby’s likelihood of ever wearing a Maple Leafs sweater.
McGuire described O’Brien as “a high achiever,” emphasizing the value of a fresh start for Toronto’s roster. “Not to say the people in Toronto before him were not, they all are when they get to that level. It’s just that now, the slate is clean for everybody. There’s no holdover, there’s no remembering what you did and didn’t do. Andy comes in with a clean slate, and so do the players,” he said.
When asked whether O’Brien’s presence might entice Crosby to consider Toronto, McGuire shut down the speculation. “I would be surprised if he weren’t a Penguin for life,” he stated. He acknowledged the chatter that surrounded Crosby last season, noting that management had been asked about the possibility of a mid-season re-evaluation and move. “Well, that didn’t come to fruition,” McGuire continued. “Sidney was tremendous last year. He led the team to the playoffs. I think they underachieved in the playoffs. I think part of that was fatigue. Part of that was some guys that were a little bit younger, they weren’t ready for that. But we’ll see how it plays out this year. I think the Penguins are going to be like Toronto, a tough team to play against.”
Despite being linked to other clubs last season, including the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche, Crosby delivered a strong campaign that returned the Penguins to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2022. His well-documented loyalty and willingness to accept a significant discount on his salary further reduce the chances he will ever play for another NHL team.
Crosby’s current contract expires after the upcoming season. He has indicated he is comfortable with year-to-year deals as he aims to extend his career as long as possible. “Yeah, I’m saying year to year based on contracts,” he explained. “It just seems to make sense. I mean, it could change. We’ll see. Kyle (Dubas) and I haven’t even talked about it. But I’ll talk with Pat (Brisson) and Kyle later this summer. We’ll talk about it and do what makes sense. If it does make sense to sign for a couple of years, then we’ll do that.”
The Maple Leafs’ hiring of O’Brien represents a meaningful investment in player development and longevity. Yet, according to McGuire, any notion that it creates a pathway for Crosby to Toronto remains firmly in the realm of speculation rather than realistic expectation. For now, the Penguins captain’s future appears tied to Pittsburgh, while the Leafs continue building their own new foundation under Chayka’s leadership.
