Shocking Reconstruction: This Is What Our Denisovan Ancestors Really Looked Like 75,000 Years Ago

In 2010, the discovery of a single pinky bone in a Siberian cave sparked a scientific breakthrough that would reshape our understanding of early human history. From this tiny fragment, researchers have now unveiled the first-ever facial reconstruction of a Denisovan, a teenage girl who lived approximately 75,000 years ago in modern-day Siberia. This remarkable achievement, detailed in a study published in the journal Cell, offers an unprecedented glimpse into the appearance of one of our mysterious archaic human ancestors, the Denisovans.

Using advanced DNA analysis, scientists extracted genetic material from the pinky bone and employed DNA methylation patterns to reconstruct the skeletal morphology of this Denisovan girl. Methylation patterns serve as a blueprint, revealing how chemical modifications to gene expression can shape physical traits. By comparing the Denisovan DNA to that of modern humans and Neanderthals, researchers identified both shared and distinct anatomical features, creating a methyl map that guided their reconstruction.

To validate their approach, the team tested the same method on known skeletal morphologies of a Neanderthal and a chimpanzee, achieving an impressive 85 percent accuracy in identifying divergent traits. This gave them confidence in their Denisovan reconstruction, which revealed a portrait of a hominin with both familiar and striking characteristics.

The study found that Denisovans shared some traits with their close relatives, the Neanderthals, such as an elongated face and a wide pelvis. However, they also exhibited unique features, including an increased dental arch—meaning their teeth protruded farther—and lateral cranial expansion, indicating wider skulls. “I was expecting Denisovan traits to be similar to Neanderthals, just because Neanderthals are their closest relatives,” said lead author David Gokhman, a geneticist at Stanford University, in an interview with Live Science. “But in the few traits where they differ, the differences are extreme.”

Before this breakthrough, our knowledge of Denisovans was limited due to the scarcity of remains—just a pinky bone, a jawbone, and a few teeth, with no complete skeleton yet discovered. Despite this, we know Denisovans coexisted with Neanderthals until about 15,000 years ago, with evidence of interbreeding in regions stretching from Siberia to Southeast Asia. Genetic traces of this interspecies mating persist in some modern human populations today. The Denisovan lineage diverged from a common ancestor with Neanderthals over 500,000 years ago, making them genetically distinct despite physical similarities.

The accuracy of the reconstruction was further confirmed in May 2019 when a separate team identified a Denisovan jawbone. Gokhman’s team compared their predictions to the jawbone’s anatomy and found that seven out of eight predictions matched, reinforcing the reliability of their method. “The only true test of our predictions is to find more Denisovan bones and match them,” Gokhman noted.

This Denisovan reconstruction marks a significant milestone, but it’s not the first time scientists have visualized ancient humans. In 2018, researchers created a full-body model of a Neanderthal based on 40,000-year-old bones from Belgium and a Cro-Magnon, an early modern human. In 2017, a facial reconstruction was made of a 9,500-year-old man from a skull found in Jericho.

As more Denisovan remains are uncovered, the image of these enigmatic ancestors will become even clearer, shedding light on a chapter of human history that has long been shrouded in mystery.
