A shocking secret hidden within ancient Egyptian paintings has been revealed thanks to new X-ray technology!

Archaeologists have uncovered hidden details and alterations in ancient Egyptian paintings, revealing artistic processes and cultural shifts from over 3,000 years ago. Using cutting-edge portable chemical imaging technology, researchers have peeled back the layers of two Ramesside Period (1292–1069 BC) masterpieces from tomb chapels in the Theban Necropolis. Published in PLOS ONE, the groundbreaking study by Philippe Martinez of Sorbonne University and the University of Liège offers fresh insights into the creative and symbolic world of ancient Egyptian art.

Pioneering Portable X-ray Technology

For the first time, researchers employed portable X-ray fluorescence imaging (XRF) to analyze ancient Egyptian paintings directly in their original settings, bypassing the need for controlled lab environments. This non-invasive technique allowed the team to identify paint composition, layering, and hidden alterations with unprecedented precision. “We discovered things that were right in front of our eyes but remained unseen,” Martinez told Newsweek, highlighting how the technology revealed details obscured by conventional observation.

The study focused on two paintings, including a portrait of Pharaoh Ramesses II, located in the tomb of Nakhtamun near Thebes (modern-day Luxor). By scanning the artworks, the team uncovered subtle changes that shed light on the artists’ intentions and the evolving cultural significance of the depicted elements.

Hidden Alterations in Ancient Masterpieces

In one painting, researchers detected adjustments to the position of a figure’s arm, sparking questions about the artists’ creative decisions. While the exact reasons for this change remain unclear, it suggests a deliberate refinement during the painting process. In the second artwork, a portrait of Ramesses II, the team found modifications to the pharaoh’s crown and other royal items, reflecting shifts in their symbolic meaning over time. These alterations indicate that ancient Egyptian artists adapted their work to align with changing religious and cultural ideologies.

The analysis also revealed a striking anatomical detail in the Ramesses II portrait: a protrusive Adam’s apple, a feature rarely depicted in the highly formalized Egyptian art style. This discovery challenges traditional interpretations of the artwork, which previously suggested the pharaoh was mourning his father, Pharaoh Seti I (reigned c. 1294–1279 BC).

Reinterpreting Ramesses II’s Divine Connection

The XRF scan clarified the painting’s context, showing Ramesses II positioned beneath a cult canopy, facing the god Ptah. This depiction underscores the pharaoh’s divine relationship with the deity, a central theme in ancient Egyptian art. Additionally, the researchers uncovered a significant alteration in the pharaoh’s attire. Initially, Ramesses II was portrayed wearing a “shebyu collar,” a necklace of large gold beads popular during the 20th dynasty (c. 1186–1070 BC), not during his reign (c. 1279–1213 BC). The collar was later painted over with a “wesekh” necklace, a flat jewelry piece more characteristic of Ramesses II’s era.

This correction suggests that later artists updated the painting to align with historical accuracy or contemporary symbolism. “Seemingly meaningless corrections… show that we remain clearly ignorant of what was really important for the ancient Egyptian eye and mind,” the research team noted, emphasizing the complexity of these artistic choices.

Bridging Art History and Science

The study marks a turning point in the analysis of Ramesside Period art, which has often been overlooked due to its ritual and religious focus. Unlike earlier Egyptian art featuring “scenes of daily life,” these tomb paintings prioritize symbolic representations. By combining art history with advanced scientific techniques, the researchers have unlocked a deeper understanding of the paintings’ composition and cultural significance.

The use of XRF imaging not only reveals hidden details but also enables a multidisciplinary approach to studying ancient art. The technology provides “a renewed visual approach based on chemistry,” the authors wrote, allowing researchers to explore the practical and symbolic roles of pigments and color in ancient Egyptian representations.
