Last month, an extraordinary event unfolded at Splinter Disc City Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, when a small hammerhead shark plummeted from the sky, startling a group of disc golfers. The bizarre incident, which turned a routine game into a viral sensation, was the result of a bird’s lost lunch.
Jonathan Marlowe, a local disc golfer, captured the moment in photos that have since taken social media by storm. In the images, Marlowe’s friend is seen holding up the aquatic predator, a hammerhead shark measuring just over a foot long. Marlowe recounted the surreal experience online, explaining how the group witnessed an osprey carrying the shark while they were teeing off on the 11th hole. “Two crows chased it into a tree where it dropped its prey,” he wrote.
The unexpected drop turned the shark into an unlikely hazard on the course, far from the typical obstacles disc golfers anticipate. While hammer throws are a common term in the sport, a hammerhead shark was certainly not in the forecast.
“I’ve never seen this,” Marlowe remarked, echoing the astonishment of onlookers. The incident serves as a wild reminder of nature’s unpredictability, blending the worlds of marine life and disc golf in a way no one could have predicted.
