A former White House official has made a shocking claim that the U.S. government has been building secret shelters in preparation for a “near-extinction event.”

News.com.au reported on May 6th that a former official who served under President George H. W. Bush revealed the U.S. government has spent years secretly constructing an underground “city” where the wealthy and powerful could seek refuge in the event of a “near-extinction event.”
Catherine Austin Fitts, who served as Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 1989 to 1990, shared this shocking information during an appearance on former Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s podcast, although she did not provide specific evidence.
Mysterious Spending
Fitts, 75, cited research by Michigan State University economist Mark Skidmore. In 2017, Skidmore released a report claiming that he and a group of academics had uncovered $21 trillion in “unauthorized” spending within the Departments of Defense and Housing and Urban Development between 1998 and 2015.
At the time, Skidmore stated he began investigating this spending after hearing Fitts “mention a report indicating that the Army had $6.5 trillion in unsupported adjustments or spending for fiscal year 2015.”

This meant that unsupported adjustments were 54 times greater than the spending approved by Congress.
Initially, Skidmore said he thought Fitts had made a mistake and intended to say $6.5 billion, not $6.5 trillion. He therefore personally reviewed the report and confirmed the figure was indeed $6.5 trillion.
According to Fitts, this money was used to develop an “underground base, city infrastructure, and transportation systems” that were kept hidden from the public.
170 Secret Facilities
She stated she spent two years researching where the $21 trillion went and found evidence of 170 secret facilities in the U.S. alone.
Additionally, Fitts suggested that some of these bases are located at the bottom of the ocean, not just underground.
Regarding the purpose of these underground bases, Fitts believes they would be used if a “near-extinction event” were to occur.
However, she also suggested that these bases could be used by the government for “secret” projects, such as a “secret space program.”
$20 Million Doomsday Bunker Membership Fee
Fitts’ controversial claims come just months after a Virginia-based company called SAFE (Strategically Armored & Fortified Environments) unveiled plans to build a luxurious $300 million doomsday bunker called “Aerie.”
The company stated that the facility would provide “AI-backed” medical care, “wellness programs,” and the ability to “blend protection and luxury” in an unprecedented way. SAFE announced its intention to build bunkers in all 50 states, but would start in Virginia due to its proximity to Washington D.C. Each member will be required to pay a $20 million membership fee for access when needed.
