Tanzania has a deadly lake: Any creature that touches it turns into a motionless stone statue

Lake Natron, located in Tanzania along the East African Rift System, is one of the most inhospitable bodies of water on Earth. This “soda” lake, characterized by high levels of dissolved sodium and carbonate, has a pH that can reach an astonishing 10.5—nearly as caustic as ammonia solution. The lake’s extreme alkalinity, combined with its scalding temperatures and high salt content, makes it a deadly environment for most creatures, turning those that perish on its shores into calcified mummies, preserved as if frozen in time.

A Harsh Geological Marvel

Situated in a region where the African Plate is being torn apart by a divergent tectonic plate boundary, Lake Natron owes its unique chemistry to volcanic processes. Sodium carbonate and calcium carbonate, produced by volcanic activity, flow into the lake from surrounding hills and hot springs beneath its surface. Unlike most lakes, Natron has no outlet to a river or sea, causing its chemical concentration to remain intensely high year-round. The lake’s shallow depth—only 1.6 feet (0.5 meters)—and its width of approximately 9 miles (15 kilometers) allow it to shrink and expand with the seasons. During the dry season, reduced rainfall and river input cause the lake to contract, intensifying its harsh conditions.

The water temperature can soar to a blistering 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius) during the hottest periods, according to NASA’s Earth Observatory. This extreme heat, combined with the lake’s alkalinity, creates an environment so hostile that it can severely burn the skin and eyes of any creature that comes into contact with it.

A Haven for the Adapted

Despite its deadly nature, Lake Natron supports a surprising amount of life, particularly for species uniquely adapted to its extreme conditions. The lake is the world’s most significant breeding site for lesser flamingos (Phoeniconaias minor), hosting 1.5 to 2.5 million of these birds—about 75% of the global population—according to the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority. Lesser flamingos thrive here, thanks to tough skin and scales on their legs that protect them from the caustic water. During the dry season, they build nests on temporary islands that form in the lake, where their young are shielded from predators by the surrounding deadly waters.

The lake’s high salt content also fosters the growth of salt-loving microorganisms, such as haloarchaea and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). These organisms, thriving in the concentrated conditions, produce pigments that tint the lake vibrant shades of red. Interestingly, these same cyanobacteria are the primary food source for lesser flamingos, giving the birds their iconic pink hue.

A Graveyard of Stone Statues

Lake Natron gained international attention in 2013 through photographer Nick Brandt’s haunting images in his book Across the Ravaged Land (Abrams Books, 2013). Brandt discovered the calcified remains of birds and bats along the lake’s shores, their bodies preserved by the sodium carbonate in a process that left them resembling stone statues. He carefully positioned these carcasses on branches and in the water to create the illusion that they were “alive again in death,” as he described. While the exact cause of death for these creatures remains uncertain, the lake’s extreme conditions likely played a role. Birds like doves and fish eagles, which do not breed or feed at Lake Natron but inhabit nearby salt marshes and freshwater wetlands, are among those occasionally found preserved.

A Diverse Surrounding Ecosystem

Beyond the lake itself, the surrounding landscape of salt marshes and freshwater wetlands supports a rich diversity of wildlife. Greater flamingos, pelicans, ostriches, buffalo, wildebeest, and other species thrive in these adjacent ecosystems, coexisting in a region shaped by the same geological forces that make Lake Natron so extreme.

A Paradox of Life and Death

Lake Natron is a paradox—a place where life and death coexist in stark contrast. Its deadly waters, capable of turning creatures into motionless stone-like figures, also provide a sanctuary for specially adapted species like the lesser flamingo. This unique soda lake, shaped by volcanic activity and unrelenting environmental forces, stands as a testament to nature’s ability to create both beauty and peril in equal measure.
