The 20 Children of Bullenhuser Damm – A Reminder That We Must Always Protect Children
On 20 April 1945, just days before the end of the war in Europe, twenty Jewish children aged 5 to 12, along with four adult caretakers, lost their lives at Bullenhuser Damm, a subcamp of Neuengamme concentration camp near Hamburg, Germany.

The children, who came from several European countries, had previously been subjected to unethical medical experiments. As Allied forces approached, those responsible ordered the elimination of the children and their caretakers to destroy evidence.
The crime came to light after the war through Allied investigations and survivor testimonies. Some of those responsible were later brought to justice. Today, the former school building is a memorial and educational centre with a peaceful rose garden and twenty oak trees – one for each child.

The Bullenhuser Damm tragedy teaches us that: Children are always the most innocent victims in any war or act of hatred. Remembering history is not about fostering hate, but about building a safer future. Education about the Holocaust and war crimes is a shared responsibility of humanity.
Let us take a quiet moment to remember the twenty children and four adults who were lost in the spring of 1945. May they rest forever in peace. We remember their lives to build a future where such atrocities can never happen again.
