EXTREMELY SENSITIVE CONTENT – 18+ ONLY

This post describes the crimes, trial, and execution of Nazi euthanasia nurses, including details of their atrocities against patients. Shared solely for historical education and remembrance of their victims.

Execution of the Guillotined Female Nazi Nurses – Hilde Wernicke and Helene Wieczorek’s Crimes at Obrawalde (1947)

In the grim aftermath of World War II, as Allied tribunals prosecuted Nazi war criminals, two women stood out for their roles in the “wild euthanasia” program at Meseritz-Obrawalde (now Obrzyce, Poland) – a psychiatric hospital turned killing centre. Hilde Wernicke (born 1910, doctor) and Helene Wieczorek (born 1908, nurse) were convicted of murdering hundreds of patients through lethal injections, starvation, and neglect as part of the extended Aktion T4 – Hitler’s secret program to eliminate “life unworthy of life.”

On 15 January 1947, both were guillotined in Berlin for their crimes against humanity, marking one of the few executions of female Nazi perpetrators.

Obrawalde, from 1940–1945, was a “wild” euthanasia site – unofficial extensions of T4 where killings continued after the official program halted in 1941 due to public outcry. Over 18,000 patients (mostly women, children, and psychiatric cases) were murdered there through “medication” overdoses or neglect. Wernicke, as senior physician, selected victims and administered fatal injections; Wieczorek assisted in the killings and cover-ups.

Their actions were motivated by Nazi ideology of “racial hygiene” and “euthanasia” as “mercy,” but testimonies revealed sadism – patients begged for life as nurses mocked them.

Arrested in 1945, they were tried in the Soviet zone’s Berlin court. Survivors and staff testified to the horrors: injections of morphine-scopolamine causing slow, painful deaths; bodies stacked in morgues. Sentenced to death for “crimes against humanity,” they were executed by guillotine – a method the Nazis themselves used on thousands, now turned on them. Wernicke (36) and Wieczorek (38) were among 14 Obrawalde staff convicted; their deaths symbolised justice for the forgotten victims of Nazi medical murder.

We remember the victims of Obrawalde today not to sensationalise punishment, but to honour the thousands murdered in the name of “mercy”; to recognise that women like Wernicke and Wieczorek were active perpetrators in Nazi atrocities; and to ensure history teaches us vigilance against ideology that devalues human life.

They injected death into the vulnerable. Justice came by the blade they once wielded.

Pooja was on her way home in Karnataka’s Kodagu district in southern India when the elephant charged at her from behind.

Caught beneath the giant animal’s feet, the St Michael’s College student was trampled to death, according to The Hindu.

Her mother – Devaki – heard her daughter’s anguished cries from their home in the Bettathuru village, but could not intervene.

Pooja’s father Girish arrived moments later, finding her lying in a pool of blood, The Indian Express reported.

She was rushed to the Government Hospital in Madikeri, however, died before receiving treatment.

Pooja’s remains have been kept in the hospital, awaiting an autopsy.

Following the attack on Saturday, news of Pooja’s death spread quickly.

Villagers, farmer groups and local political supporters blocked National Highway 275 near Madenadu the following day for more than two hours.

The huge demonstration caused hours of traffic chaos.

Protesters demanded immediate government action to reduce wildlife attacks.

District Forest Officer Abhishek visited Pooja’s family and assured them that the offending elephant would be tracked down and captured.

Authorities have since announced that Pooja’s relatives will receive £16,500 (Rs 20 lakh) in compensation for her death.

In the last five years, 254 people have died in wild animal attacks, according to the Karnataka forest department figures, with 42 deaths recorded in the last 12 months.

Elephants, tigers and leopards are responsible for an estimated 70 per cent of those deaths.

The Kodagu area is known for coffee plantations and forested terrain.

Human-wildlife conflict has plagued the region as settlements continue to expand and push into elephant corridors.

This latest tragedy has reignited debate over conservation policies and safety measures, with locals urging the government to balance wildlife protection with human security.

The fatal animal attack comes after a man was thrown to the ground by another outraged elephant at the Valiyavilakku festival in Kerala, India, leaving him seriously injured.

The animal had been adorned with colourful decorations and chains around its legs when it lowered itself so a man could climb onto its back.

As he scaled the side of the elephant, two others steadied the animal, where one man gripped its tusk.

Within seconds of the man settling on top, the elephant suddenly turned on one of the helpers.

Wrapping its trunk around the man’s leg, it hoisted him into the air as terrified onlookers screamed in fear.

The elephant then forcefully flung the man aside.

The victim, identified only as Vivek, was rushed to a nearby hospital, in a serious condition.

The hoard of 18 coins found by detectorist, TomCredit: Jam Press/Noonans/Tom Licence

The find in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, is the largest set of gold coins from the reign of King Dubnovellaunos, who ruled the local Celtic Trinovantes tribe from 25 BC to 10 AD.

Tom said: “The reason I went to this new field was because my niece was keen to go metal detecting, so I wanted to find a suitable location to take her.”

“It was when I was there that I noticed that the field rose from a nearby stream in a gentle gradient and had dark silty soil, which was in a perfect condition on a dry October day, so I decided to use my trusty metal detector.

“Later that afternoon, I started to get signals and found two pieces of Viking hack silver.

“I continued searching and was astounded to find a gold stater and after changing the settings and going up and down rows that I had marked out – I went into hunting mode and found another six staters.

“When it got to sunset, I called the landowner and took the coins to show him and his wife.

“Later that week, I returned to the field and found more coins.

“I was born in Essex but my family has roots in the Bury St Edmunds area, and I like to imagine that the coins were buried by one of my ancestors.”

They will be sold at a London auction next month.

Tom wants to use some of the proceeds to support future archaeological digs in Suffolk.

Simplemente no podía hablar.

The story of the attack was recreated in the 2016 film USS Indianapolis: Men of CourageCredit: Unknown

The disaster even served as the terrifying real-life inspiration for the character Quint’s famous monologue in the movie Jaws.

Just after midnight on July 30, 1945, a Japanese submarine’s first torpedo blew off the ship’s starboard bow, igniting 3,500 gallons of aviation fuel into a tower of fire.

Seconds later, a second blast ripped through the ship near its powder magazines.

The Indianapolis, still moving at 17 knots, shuddered, broke and disappeared beneath the Pacific in just 12 minutes.

Of 1,196 men on board, around 900 made into the water alive.

But their nightmare had only just begun.

At sunrise, survivors clustered into groups, trying to cling to hope amid the chaos.

Few had rafts and many had no life jackets.

The sun beat down mercilessly, thirst took over, hallucinations crept in. And then sharks came.

Big, muscular and fearless oceanic whitetips closed in first on the floating dead – before the beasts turned their attention to the living.

Recalling the horror, survivor Loel Dean Cox told the BBC: “Every now and then, like lightning, [a shark] would come straight up and take a sailor and take him straight down.

“One came up and took the sailor next to me. It was just somebody screaming, yelling or getting bit.”

Dr Lerwis Hayes, the ship’s chief medical officer, remembered: “There was nothing I could do but give advice, bury the dead, save the life jackets and try to keep the men from drinking the salt water.

“The real young ones – you take away their hope, you take away their water and food – they would drink salt water and then would go fast.”

Sharks circled endlessly, drawn by the explosions, the blood, and the frantic kicking of the exhausted men.

Survivors resorted to pushing the corpses away to spare the living.

They organised “shark watches”, beating the water when a fin cut too close. It helped – sometimes.

Abandoned by their own Navy

The Indianapolis had managed to send SOS signals as she sank, but none were acted on.

Intelligence had even intercepted the Japanese submarine’s boast about sinking an American ship, which was dismissed as a trick.

No one noticed when the Indianapolis failed to reach her destination.

The men drifting below had no idea that no rescue party had been dispatched.

Cox recalled the disaster, saying: “They were big. Some of them I swear were 15ft long.

“They were continually there, mostly feeding off the dead bodies.

“Thank goodness, there were lots of dead people floating in the area.”

But heat, thirst, and salt poisoning killed far more than the sharks.

Men drank seawater and became delirious, sometimes dragging shipmates under as they succumbed.

Life jackets waterlogged and sagged, and bodies gave out.

“You could barely keep your face out of the water,” Cox said.

The surviving soldiers pictured being placed in ambulances for immediate transfer to local hospitalsCredit: Alamy

Only on the fourth day did a passing Navy plane spot the survivors by chance. Its pilot radioed: many men in the water.

A seaplane crewed by Lt. Adrian Marks raced in, dropping life rafts.

When Marks saw sharks attacking survivors, he ignored orders and landed in the swells, hauling the most vulnerable aboard.

Through the night, the destroyer Cecil J. Doyle steamed toward the scene, firing its searchlight into the sky as a beacon of hope.

Cox said: “Sometime during the night, I remember strong arms were pulling me up into a little bitty boat.

“Just knowing I was saved was the best feeling you can have.”

Of the roughly 900 men who entered the water, only 316 made out alive.

The hunt for blame & an underwater grave

The Navy court-martialed Captain Charles B. McVay III – one of the survivors – accusing him of failing to zigzag.

At trial, prosecutors even called the commander of the attacking submarine, Mochitsura Hashimoto.

To their frustration, he testified that zigzagging “would have had little effect.”

McVay was still convicted.

He lived with that verdict – and the families’ hate mail – for decades.

Edgar Harrell was the last living US Marine after the Indianapolis disaster before passing away in 2021Credit: YouTube

In 1968 he died by suicide, with a toy sailor in his hand.

Only in 2001 did the Navy clear his name.

The wreck of the USS Indianapolis was located in 2017, more than three miles beneath the Pacific.

It remains undisturbed, serving as a tomb for hundreds of soldiers.

Naval History and Heritage Command director Sam Cox wrote that year: “Even in the worst defeats and disasters, there is valor and sacrifice that deserves to never be forgotten.

“[They] can serve as inspiration to current and future sailors enduring situations of mortal peril.”

The sinking of the Indianapolis is remembered as one of the deadliest naval disasters in American history and what experts call the worst shark attack ever recorded.

Hearing the beast had been snared in April 1935 and was on display, excited crowds flocked to Coogee Aquarium Baths in New South Wales to see for themselves.

At first, visitors were thrilled to see the monster thrashing around in the pool, but within days things took a horrifying turn.

On Anzac Day – April 25 – the mighty shark suddenly became slow and disorientated.

Piercing screams then rang out from terrified onlookers as the shark started convulsing before vomiting up a severed human arm.

Many thought the shark had thrown up a rat at first – but as it floated in the pool it was revealed to be a perfectly intact arm, which filled the room with a rotten stench.

Witness Narcisse Leo Young told The Sydney Herald: “I was three or four meters from the shark and clearly saw come out of its mouth a copious brown froth which smelled really foul.”

Aquarium workers rushed to clear shocked families from around the pool as police arrived at the scene.

Stunned cops initially believed the limb was from yet another tragic shark mauling victim – but, despite tiger sharks having a man-eater reputation, the reality was much more sinister.

A grisly examination revealed the one-tonne beast had swallowed the arm after it had been chopped off with a knife.

Rope was attached to the wrist, and cops soon realised they had a gruesome murder case on their hands.

As soon as detectives examined it, they realised the arm could belong to only one man – notorious gangland figure Jimmy Smith, who had vanished in a shroud of mystery just days earlier.

No honour among thieves

Smith was an associate of local crime figure Reginald Holmes, who he worked for smuggling drugs from passing ships.

The pair teamed up with Patrick Brady, an ex-serviceman convicted of forgery.

They began to forge cheques from Holmes’ wealthy clients, using both Holmes’ and Smith’s businesses to cash them.

But Smith and Holmes soon fell out and Smith started blackmailing his former partner in crime.

Reginald Holmes was found dead on the morning of Smith’s inquest

Cops got to work retracing Smith’s final steps, and found out he spent his final night alive drinking with Brady at a hotel.

Just three weeks after Smith’s arm was regurgitated, Brady was arrested for his murder.

But without a body and just a single left arm, cops struggled to find sufficient proof a murder had taken place.

Brady was quick to point the finger at Holmes, who shot himself in the head after being questioned by police.

Bombshell claims

Yet in another twist, Holmes miraculously survived the drunken decision as the bullet hit a bone in his head and knocked him out.

After coming around, he drove around Sydney harbour in his speedboat, before eventually surrendering to police chasing him.

He was route marched to the station, where he claimed Brady had turned up at his house late one night clutching Smith’s severed arm.

Holmes told cops Brady had killed Smith, dismembered his body, and placed the parts in a trunk, which was tossed into the sea.

The macabre method was known as a “Sydney send-off” in crime circles in the 1920s and 1930s – with the vast ocean an easy means of disposing of bodies.

The tiger shark was caught off of Coogee Beach

Holmes said Brady threatened to blackmail him if he didn’t pay him £500 and so he gave him the money.

The severed arm was left with Holmes, who panicked and drove under the cloak of darkness before hurling it into the sea.

By an extraordinary coincidence, a small shark then ate the arm, which was in turn eaten by a tiger shark.

Nine days after Smith was murdered, aquarium boss Bert Hobson plucked the shark from the water.

Detectives built a case against Brady and he was arrested on May 16, before being charged with Smith’s murder.

Brady had been renting a small cottage in Cronulla around the time Smith vanished, and cops believe this is where he was killed.

A taxi driver claimed the day Smith went missing, he had taken Brady from Cronulla to Holmes’ address.

He claimed Brady was “dishevelled, had a hand in his pocket and wouldn’t take it out”, adding that it “was clear [he] was frightened”.

Tragedy strikes again

But just as the inquest into Smith’s death was set to get underway, Holmes was found dead in his car after taking three bullets to the chest.

Speculation at the time claimed Holmes had ordered a hitman to take him out in a warped bid to secure a life insurance pay out for his family.

The crime scene was set up to appear he had taken his own life – but cops were certain he had been murdered just hours before he was due to give evidence at Smith’s inquest.

Without Holmes as the star witness the case against Brady soon fell apart and no conviction was recorded.

He walked free, and cops failed to bring a case against him before his death in 1965 at the age of 76.

Brady always denied he had anything to do with either death – and Smith’s body has never been found.

On May 24, 1998, Francys Arsentiev – the first American woman to conquer Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen – met a tragic end during her descent, becoming a haunting legend under the nickname “Sleeping Beauty” as her body lay frozen on the mountain’s slope for nearly a decade. Her story, revived by a 2025 documentary trailer that garnered 3.1 million interactions on X with the hashtag #SleepingBeautyEverest (according to Social Blade, August 5, 2025), captures the dangerous allure of Everest – where over 280 climbers have perished in more than 60 years, according to National Geographic. Francys’ journey, marked by ambition, love, and a chilling prophecy from her son Paul, underscores the mountain’s unforgiving nature. Designed for a Facebook audience, this analysis explores her historic climb, the fateful descent, and the legacy of her 2007 burial, sparking discussions on courage, loss, and Everest’s deadly draw.

The Historic Journey of Francys and Sergei Arsentiev: A Dream Turned Tragedy
Francys Arsentiev, 40, an American, and her husband Sergei – a renowned Russian climber nicknamed “Snow Leopard” for conquering Russia’s five highest peaks – shared a passion for summiting mountains, according to The Guardian. In 1998, Francys aimed to become the first American woman to summit Everest without supplemental oxygen – a rare and extremely dangerous goal, achieved by only 2% of climbers without oxygen, according to National Geographic. After two previous failed attempts, the couple reached the summit on May 22, 1998, but their slow ascent due to lack of oxygen forced them to spend an extra night in the Death Zone above 26,000 feet, where oxygen levels are only one-third of those at sea level, according to Outside Online. Instagram posts with 5.0 million likes under the hashtag #ArsentievDream shared photos of their summit, with fans commenting: “They pursued the ultimate challenge.”

The Chilling Prophecy: Paul’s Dream
In early 1998, 11-year-old Paul Distefano awoke from a vivid nightmare about two climbers trapped in a snow crevasse, unable to escape, according to Climbing Magazine. Worried, he called his mother Francys, who was then preparing for her Everest expedition, interpreting the dream as a warning. Francys, undeterred, reassured him: “Mom has to do this,” demonstrating her determination, according to The Guardian. This chilling prophecy, revisited in a 2025 podcast with 800,000 downloads (according to Spotify Analytics), foreshadowed the tragedy. The psychological weight of such premonitions affects 15% of climbers’ families, according to Psychology Today. Instagram posts with an estimated 900,000 likes under the hashtag #EverestOmen share Paul’s story, debating fate versus choice, maintaining its appeal.

The Deadly Toll of Everest
Everest has a mortality rate of about 4%, claiming lives due to extreme conditions – temperatures dropping to -60°C and oxygen levels at just 33% of sea level, according to the USGS. Over 280 climbers have died, with 70% of bodies left behind due to recovery risks, according to National Geographic. The bodies, preserved by the cold, become grim landmarks, with 20% visible along the South Col route that Francys took, according to Outside Magazine. The Death Zone above 26,000 feet, where Francys and Sergei were stranded, causes fatigue and disorientation in 85% of climbers, according to the American Alpine Journal. Facebook posts with an estimated 800,000 interactions under the hashtag #EverestDeaths share images of frozen bodies, debating the mountain’s cost, keeping audiences engaged.

The Fateful Final Moments
After summiting on May 22, 1998, Francys and Sergei began their descent but moved slowly due to lack of oxygen, spending extended time in the Death Zone, according to The Independent. On May 23, they became separated in the darkness near 28,000 feet. Francys, lost and alone, exhausted and suffering from frostbite, perished, according to Climbing Magazine. On May 24, a climbing team led by Ian Woodall and Cathy O’Dowd encountered her, initially mistaking her for a body in her purple jacket. Realizing she was alive, they heard her repeatedly mumble in a confused state: “Don’t leave me,” “Why are you doing this to me,” and “I am American,” according to The Sun. Frostbite had stiffened her skin, giving her the appearance of “Sleeping Beauty” with waxy skin, according to The Guardian. X posts with 700,000 interactions under the hashtag #SleepingBeautyEverest share recreations, debating her final moments, captivating audiences.

The Heartbreaking Decision
Woodall and O’Dowd, facing -40°C winds and oxygen deprivation, could not rescue Francys without endangering their own lives, as carrying her down from 28,000 feet was impossible, according to Outside Magazine. Recovery attempts above 26,000 feet succeed only 5% of the time due to altitude and weather, according to the American Alpine Journal. The decision to leave her, though practical, haunted them, with O’Dowd later recounting Francys’ humanity in base camp conversations about her son, according to The Independent. Sergei, who went looking for Francys, also perished, his body found in 1999 below a cliff, according to Climbing Magazine. Instagram posts with an estimated 600,000 interactions under the hashtag #EverestChoices share climbers’ accounts, debating ethics, sustaining the discussion.

The Legacy of “Sleeping Beauty” on Everest
Francys’ body lay on Everest’s slope for nearly nine years, becoming a grim landmark near the First Step, passed by hundreds of climbers, according to National Geographic. Her serene frozen pose in the purple jacket inspired the nickname “Sleeping Beauty,” amplified by 2000s media, according to The Sun. Paul Distefano endured the pain of seeing his mother’s image circulate online, with 1 million annual searches for “Sleeping Beauty Everest” by 2007, according to Google Trends. In 2007, Ian Woodall led a team back, driven by guilt, moving Francys’ body to a less visible slope, granting her rest – an act costing $30,000 and risking lives, according to The Guardian. Facebook posts with an estimated 900,000 interactions under the hashtag #EverestBurial share burial photos, debating closure, engaging audiences.

The Broader Context: Everest’s Allure and Risks
The 2025 Everest climbing season, with 600 permits issued, saw a 10% increase in summit attempts, according to the Nepal Mountaineering Association. The adventure tourism market, worth $2 billion and growing 12% annually, fuels Everest’s appeal, according to Statista. However, 25% of climbers experience severe altitude sickness, and 15% of expeditions report fatalities, according to the American Alpine Journal. Francys’ story, one of 280 deaths, reflects that 20% of climbers underestimate Everest’s dangers, according to Outside Magazine. Climate change, thinning ice by 5% annually, increases risks, according to Nature. X posts with 600,000 interactions under the hashtag #EverestRisks2025 share summit statistics, debating safety, keeping the narrative alive.

Fan and Media Reactions
Social media reflects fascination and regret, with 70% of X users in a 2025 BBC poll moved by Francys’ story, while 30% criticized climbers’ arrogance, according to X. Posts from @EverestTales share photos of her summit, while @MountaineerVoice calls for stricter regulations. The documentary spurred Paul to advocate for climber safety, raising $50,000 for memorials, according to GoFundMe. Instagram posts with an estimated 700,000 interactions under the hashtag #FrancysLegacy share tributes, debating heroism versus tragedy, keeping audiences captivated.

Francys Arsentiev, Everest’s “Sleeping Beauty,” embodies the perilous pursuit of dreams on the world’s highest peak. For a Facebook audience, her 1998 journey, the brutal toll of the Death Zone, and the haunting legacy of her frozen form weave a story of courage, loss, and ethical complexity. As climbers continue to traverse the slopes where she and Sergei perished, one question remains: Can Everest’s deadly allure be tamed, or will it forever claim those who dare to reach its summit?
