She spent nearly 4 days at an altitude of over 8,400 meters – the so-called “Death Zone” on Mount Everest – where the human body cannot sustain life without supplemental oxygen. The journey left her exhausted, with burning lungs and throat, and nearly cost her and her father their lives.

Bianca Adler began her journey in May with her father, Paul Adler, aiming to become one of the youngest people to conquer the world’s highest peak. They spent months preparing physically and acclimatizing to altitude before embarking.
However, when they reached above 8,400 meters – the “Death Zone” – things became brutally difficult. Bianca’s body exceeded its limits, and she experienced severe symptoms of altitude sickness.
2. The “Death Zone” – Where Oxygen Becomes a Luxury
Dr. Harly Greenberg, Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care at Northwell Health (USA), explains that above 8,000 meters, there’s almost no oxygen to sustain life. The greatest danger is hypoxia, when the body’s tissues don’t get enough oxygen, disrupting cellular processes and organ function.
If unchecked, this leads to acute altitude sickness, with symptoms like headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and insomnia.
3. HAPE and HACE – Deadly Threats

In severe cases, climbers can develop High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) , a critical condition where fluid leaks from blood vessels into brain tissue, causing neurological impairment, confusion, loss of consciousness, and even death if not descending quickly.
Both Bianca and her father nearly died from High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) , a condition where fluid floods the lungs’ air sacs, preventing oxygen absorption. Symptoms include severe coughing and a feeling of suffocation even at rest. Dr. Greenberg says this is the most common cause of death in altitude-related illnesses.
4. Other Risks – Altitude Retinopathy and Health Issues
Low oxygen levels can also cause altitude retinopathy, which can lead to permanent vision damage. Greenberg advises those with underlying lung, heart, high blood pressure, or sleep disorders to avoid extreme high-altitude climbs.
5. Glory and Danger – The Numbers Speak

At 8,848 meters, Everest is not just the “roof of the world” but the ultimate extreme challenge. The first successful summit was on May 29, 1953, by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Since then, many records have been set, but over 330 people have died on the mountain, with tragic seasons like 1996 and 2015.
