North Korean state media reported on June 24 that a “world-class cultural resort” called Wonsan Kalma has opened on the country’s east coast. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released images of visitors enjoying the beach in swimsuits as the resort welcomed domestic tourists on July 1.
The sprawling resort features water parks, high-rise hotels, and accommodation facilities with a capacity for nearly 20,000 people.
KCNA described it, saying, “The hearts of visitors swelled with emotion as they witnessed the astonishing new heights of tourism culture.” They added that tourists were “amazed by the grandeur and splendor of the tourist city, which can accommodate nearly 20,000 people.”

Nor North Korea, tourism is a potential source of foreign currency. After closing its borders due to the COVID-19 pandemic, North Korea has finally reopened to tourists. However, even before the pandemic, the number of foreign visitors was very limited. Chinese tourists accounted for about 90% of visitors, while only about 5,000 Western tourists were allowed entry. Post-pandemic, Russian tourists have only been permitted to enter North Korea since last year, and Western tourists briefly returned in February 2025.

Limited Access
However, due to restricted access to the location, primarily through Pyongyang, the resort “will likely remain small-scale,” accommodating around 170 visitors per day.
