According to warnings from scientists, Earth is spinning faster than usual, potentially shortening the length of a day to less than 24 hours. While this change might seem minor, it could have significant repercussions for modern technological systems.
Astrophysicist Graham Jones from University College London (UK) highlights three notable dates that experts are closely monitoring: July 9, July 22, and August 5, 2025. On these days, Earth is predicted to complete a rotation around its axis 1.30 to 1.51 milliseconds faster than the standard 24-hour cycle.
“It might sound insignificant,” Jones said. “But such small errors could cause malfunctions in GPS navigation systems, telecommunication networks, and even the global financial market.”

A Reversal of a Million-Year Trend
Traditionally, for millions of years, Earth has been gradually slowing down due to the Moon’s gravitational pull, a phenomenon that helped establish the current 24-hour day-night cycle. However, since 2020, something strange has occurred: Earth began to spin faster, reversing a trend that spanned millions of years.
Most notably, on July 5, 2024, Earth experienced its shortest day ever recorded, with a rotation time of just 23 hours, 59 minutes, 59.99834 seconds, which is 1.66 milliseconds faster than normal.
“No one predicted this,” said scientist Leonid Zotov from Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia). “The exact cause of this acceleration remains unclear.”
