‘GET HIM OUT NOW!’ Shock Footage Captures the Moment a Shark Invades Shaquille O’Neal’s Cage as Divers Race to Prevent Disaster

Bahamas — Dramatic footage has emerged showing basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal being urgently rescued from a shark cage after one of the predators managed to wriggle inside, just inches from his face, during filming for Discovery Channel’s Shaq Does Shark Week.

The former Los Angeles Lakers star, who stands over 7 feet tall and weighs 148kg, was participating in the high-stakes underwater stunt despite admitting he was “terrified” of sharks. The incident unfolded inside a specially constructed 12ft by 6ft metal enclosure known as the “Shaq Cage” in the waters of the Bahamas.

As O’Neal, 46, observed sharks circling the cage alongside comedian Rob Riggle, who was throwing food into the water to attract them, the situation escalated rapidly. A diver’s urgent cry cut through the tension: “There’s a shark getting in the cage! There’s a shark in the cage! We’ve got to get him out.”

Divers and crew members sprang into action, working swiftly to extract the NBA icon while others distracted the sharks. Footage shows O’Neal appearing visibly panicked as the shark writhed alarmingly close to him. Once safely pulled from the enclosure, the relieved giant exclaimed, “I survived a shark attack, you bitches!” as he climbed out.

Prior to the dive, O’Neal had displayed a mix of bravado and nerves. “Give me my goggles. I’m going in,” he told Riggle. “I ain’t afraid of no shark.” However, those close to the production noted that the 7ft+ superstar looked “a little nervous” as the sharks began circling.

Executive Producer Will Packer described the moment as a rare and fortunate escape, telling the New York Post that no one was injured. “He was apprehensive at first,” Packer said. “But once he saw the other divers and camera guys out in the water he said, ‘If those guys can do it, I’ll do it’.”

Packer explained that the breach occurred because the spacing between the bars of the custom-built cage differed from standard enclosures, allowing the shark to squeeze through — an event that reportedly had not happened on Shark Week in three decades.

“The crew looked visibly shocked,” Packer added. “Shaq hasn’t moved that fast since he was in the NBA.”

The incident has since captivated fans of the long-running Discovery Channel series, highlighting both the thrill and inherent risks of such extreme television challenges. O’Neal’s willingness to confront his fears has only added to the legend of the larger-than-life personality, turning a routine stunt into one of the most memorable moments in recent Shark Week history.

While the production emphasized safety protocols throughout, the close call serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters, even within controlled environments.
