In a disturbing incident captured on grainy CCTV footage, a five-year-old girl suffered severe injuries after a shark bit her hand at a shopping centre in Guiyang, Guizhou province, China. The attack has raised fresh questions about the adequacy of safety measures around public animal exhibits, even as authorities and the venue maintain that the child’s actions triggered the response.
The dramatic moment unfolded when the young girl, dressed in a white dress, approached the shark and turtle tank. Surveillance video shows her placing her hand near the water’s surface. In an instant, the shark lunged out of the water, sinking its sharp teeth into her hand. Her grandmother quickly pulled her away as the shark retreated back into the tank. The entire sequence, though low-resolution, captures the sudden and alarming nature of the encounter.
The girl was immediately rushed to Guizhou Orthopedics Hospital, where doctors discovered nine individual bite wounds. Dr Hong Xiao detailed the extent of the trauma: a two-inch laceration on the back of her index finger, fractures to the bones in both her index and little fingers, and severe damage to nerves and tendons. The grandmother later described the horrifying scene: “She was just standing there and the shark jumped out of the water and bit her hand. Her bones and tendons – everything were left exposed.”
Medical staff worked urgently to address the complex injuries, which will likely require extensive rehabilitation due to the involvement of critical structures in the hand.
A spokesman for the shopping centre defended the facility’s setup, stating that the tank had always been equipped with the required safety measures. “Our surveillance footage showed the girl touching the water’s surface, which is what caused [the shark to bite],” he explained. “Without touching the water, there was no possibility that the shark would leap out.”
The incident has sparked concern among parents and safety advocates about the risks posed by live animal displays in public spaces frequented by children.
