NASSAU, Bahamas — In a horrifying incident that has stunned holidaymakers and locals alike, a young woman was fatally attacked by three tiger sharks while snorkeling just feet from her mother during a family vacation in the Bahamas. The tragedy has been described as the first shark-related fatality in the region in more than a decade.
Jordan Lindsey, 21, was snorkeling off the idyllic shores of Rose Island on Wednesday when the sharks struck with devastating speed. Her mother, Kami Lindsey, was only a few feet away and immediately risked her own life in a desperate bid to save her daughter. Despite the chaos, Kami managed to reach Jordan and single-handedly drag her body to shore.
Husband and father Michael Lindsey recounted the devastating moment: “My wife, Kami, and Jordan went snorkeling on another part of the island. My wife was near Jordan, a few feet away, when the shark attacked. She said it happened so fast and no one yelled anything. My wife got to Jordan and pulled her to shore by herself.”
Jordan suffered catastrophic injuries, including the loss of her right arm and extensive bites to her left arm, both legs, and buttocks. She lost a massive amount of blood and was pronounced dead at Nassau’s Doctor’s Hospital.
The family had been enjoying a holiday in the Bahamas, including time at Rose Island — marketed as a “private beach paradise” where visitors can swim with tame pigs before moving to snorkeling spots. The attack unfolded rapidly while Jordan and her mother were in the water with other family members nearby.
Tourist Jace Holton, 32, who was on the same trip, captured photographs of two sharks still circling in the area shortly afterward. He described the scene as “pretty horrific” according to accounts from those who had been in the water.
Michael Lindsey spoke poignantly of his daughter’s character in an interview with ABC7: “Jordan was such a great daughter. We already miss her terribly. She was so caring she loved all animals — it’s ironic she would die getting attacked by a shark.”
He added that Kami only learned the full details — that three tiger sharks had been involved — when confirmed later by the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
A Promising Life Cut Short
Jordan Lindsey was a communications student and environmental researcher at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) in Los Angeles. University president Timothy Law Snyder remembered her as a passionate animal lover and dedicated climate change campaigner. A GoFundMe has been established by the family to cover the costs of repatriating her body.
The incident has cast a shadow over Rose Island’s reputation as a serene destination. While shark encounters are relatively rare, tiger sharks are among the most dangerous species in the ocean, second only to great whites in recorded fatal attacks on humans. Known for their distinctive dark stripes, serrated teeth, and powerful build (often reaching 13 feet or more), they are solitary nocturnal hunters that inhabit tropical and temperate waters and prey on a wide variety of marine life.
