Paige Winter was swimming at Fort Macon State Park on Sunday when she was suddenly bitten by a shark. The predator inflicted deep lacerations to her leg, pelvic area, and hands, prompting immediate emergency response.

Paige’s father, a firefighter and paramedic, rushed to his daughter’s aid without hesitation. He punched the shark five times in the face and nose until the animal released its grip and swam away. Once free, Paige was pulled from the water by her father and assisted by fellow beachgoers, firefighters, and paramedics who rushed to the scene. She was airlifted to a hospital for urgent treatment.

The teen underwent surgery on Sunday. According to her grandmother, Janet Winter, Paige lost her leg above the knee during the procedure. She may also require a hand transplant in the future and faces the loss of several fingers on her other hand.

“Surgery over she is still alive, one leg gone. May need a hand transplant in the future and several on the other,” Janet Winter wrote on Facebook. “Thank God our son was with her, he said he punched the shark in the face five times before it let go. Wish we could be with them. Please keep her in your prayers.”

In a positive update, Paige’s mother, Marcy Winter, later shared that her daughter is out of surgery and awake. Though still groggy from the anesthesia, Paige was already showing her resilience by cracking jokes. “She wants everyone to know that sharks are still good people,” Marcy posted.

The family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover Paige’s substantial medical expenses. The page, which initially sought £4,000, has already surpassed its goal, raising more than £6,000 thanks to an outpouring of support from friends, first responders, and compassionate strangers.

This incident is the latest in a string of serious shark encounters. Last week, a 65-year-old man from California was fatally mauled while swimming off Maui, Hawaii. In May, a Parisian surfer lost his life in the Indian Ocean after a shark severed his leg. According to historical data, the United States recorded the highest number of unprovoked shark attacks in 2018, with 32 incidents, one of which was fatal.

Despite the horror of the attack, Paige’s story highlights both the unpredictable dangers of the ocean and the extraordinary courage of a father protecting his child. As she begins her long road to recovery, the Winter family continues to receive an outpouring of prayers and support from their community and beyond.
