Its Pyramid of the Sun, Pyramid of the Moon, and the long, straight Avenue of the Dead create a monumental urban landscape capable of housing more than 100,000 people. The city’s rigid grid, massive scale, and use of materials such as mica have led some theorists to propose that it functioned as a spaceport or encoded advanced astronomical and mathematical knowledge supplied by visitors from elsewhere.
