In an extraordinary encounter off the Gulf Coast of Florida, a paddleboarder was treated to a rare sight when a massive giant manta ray glided beneath their board. The unforgettable moment, captured by drone footage, took place in mid-May near Honeymoon Island in Dunedin.

The stunning video, filmed by John Yanchoris, shows the enormous manta ray gracefully moving through the clear waters as the paddleboarder approaches. The creature, with its expansive wings, briefly swims close to the surface before diving deeper beneath the board. Far from being alarmed, the paddleboarder appears thrilled, waving and pointing excitedly at the gentle giant.
Yanchoris described the encounter to Storyful as “unbelievable,” emphasizing how “very rare” it is to spot a giant oceanic manta ray in these waters. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the giant manta ray is the largest of its kind, boasting a wingspan that can reach up to 29.5 feet, with an average of around 22 feet. These majestic creatures can weigh as much as 4,000 pounds.
