In an extraordinary discovery, researchers have uncovered nearly identical sets of dinosaur footprints, dating back 120 million years, on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean. These tracks, found in Brazil’s Sousa Basin and Cameroon’s Koum Basin, offer a fascinating glimpse into the movements of Early Cretaceous dinosaurs and the dramatic geological changes that shaped our planet.

A Remarkable Find Across Continents
Led by Louis L. Jacobs from Southern Methodist University (SMU), the research team documented over 260 footprints in Brazil and Cameroon, separated by more than 3,700 miles. The tracks, primarily from three-toed theropod dinosaurs and four-legged sauropods, are strikingly similar in age, geological context, and shape. “In terms of their shapes, they are almost identical,” Jacobs noted in a press release from SMU.

Jacobs first identified the Cameroon tracks in the 1980s. Years later, a collaboration with Ismar de Souza Carvalho, a professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, revealed that these footprints closely matched those found in Brazil. This discovery underscores how the two regions were once connected as part of the supercontinent Gondwana, which encompassed modern-day Africa, South America, Australia, and Antarctica.
Footprints as Windows into Dinosaur Behavior
Unlike fossilized bones, dinosaur footprints provide direct evidence of behavior. “Footprints are the proof of dinosaur behavior, how they walked, ran or otherwise, who they walked with, what environment they walked through, what direction they were going, and where they were when they were doing it,” Jacobs explained to CNN. These tracks suggest that dinosaurs used the region as a bustling thoroughfare, likely drawn to the lush river basins that offered abundant resources.

The footprints were formed in what was once a verdant landscape on Gondwana. “One of the youngest and narrowest geological connections between Africa and South America was the elbow of northeastern Brazil nestled against what is now the coast of Cameroon along the Gulf of Guinea,” Jacobs said. This narrow land bridge allowed dinosaurs to move freely between the two regions.
Gondwana’s Breakup and Dinosaur Highways
Over 140 million years ago, tectonic plate movements began to pull Gondwana apart, creating basins that became hotspots for dinosaur activity. In both Brazil and Cameroon, researchers identified “half-graben” basins—elongated valleys formed by the Earth’s crust stretching and faulting on one side. These basins, filled with rivers and sediment, attracted dinosaurs in search of food and water.

“Imagine a lush, open basin with vegetation for the herbivores and carnivores following,” said Lawrence Flynn, a study co-author and assistant director for the American School of Prehistoric Research at Harvard University. “If nobody is there on the ‘new’ turf, then animals will disperse into it, given no competition.” The tracks indicate that dinosaurs treated these basins like highways, frequently traversing the area.

The matching footprints serve as a tangible reminder of how Earth’s continents were once joined and how tectonic shifts reshaped the planet over millions of years.
