According to Polat, the shark’s meat is believed to help regulate blood sugar levels, offering potential relief for diabetes patients. “We freeze the meat and distribute it to customers with diabetes,” he said. “We also provide it free of charge to cancer patients, as a gesture of goodwill.” While scientific studies have suggested some therapeutic properties in shark tissue, the claims have added to the creature’s mystique.
Despite its unsettling appearance, the common thresher is not an aggressive species. In some cultures, it is even revered as a sacred animal. “Here in Turkey, though, we see it simply as a fish,” Polat clarified. “People are amazed to discover such a human-like creature in the sea. Our priority is to share it with those who might benefit from it, especially diabetes patients. If it truly helps them, that’s what matters most to us.”
