In a heart-pounding moment off the sun-soaked shores of Kalbarri, Western Australia, 13-year-old surfer Jed Gradisen found himself in the ride of his life—not just on a wave, but in a jaw-dropping collision with a bottlenose dolphin that turned his surf session into a wild tale of survival.

Jed was carving through a massive wave, the ocean roaring beneath him, when a pod of dolphins appeared on the horizon. At first, it seemed like a magical moment—dolphins are the ocean’s playful acrobats, after all. But that magic quickly turned to mayhem. “I saw them coming and thought, ‘Oh my god, they’re heading straight for me!’” Jed recalled, his voice still tinged with disbelief.

With adrenaline pumping, Jed tried to dodge the incoming marine missile. But one dolphin, a hefty beast weighing up to 500kg, had other plans. It launched itself out of the water, soaring through the air like a torpedo with fins, and slammed into Jed’s back and shoulders. The impact was so fierce that the dolphin’s nose punched clean through his surfboard, leaving both surfer and sea creature stunned.
“I jumped off my board and tried to get out of the way, but it was too late,” Jed said. “It jumped so far, I only had a couple of seconds to react.” Miraculously, Jed escaped without a scratch, though his board wasn’t so lucky. The dolphin, likely as shocked as Jed, swam off after the chaotic encounter.

Reflecting on the surreal moment, Jed added, “It was as shocked as I was. I mean, its nose went straight through my board—that had to hurt! It really didn’t know what to do, and honestly, neither did I. I’d never dream of something like this happening.”
This unforgettable clash between teen surfer and rogue dolphin is a reminder of the ocean’s untamed power and unpredictability. For Jed, it’s a story he’ll tell for years—a wild ride that turned into an aquatic nightmare, proving that when you surf the waves, you never know what might surf into you.
