Archaeologists in Iran have uncovered a remarkable and haunting discovery: the skull of a young woman, dating back over 6,200 years, bearing signs of a violent end. Found at the Chega Sofla cemetery, a prehistoric site in western Iran near the northern end of the Persian Gulf, this Copper Age skeleton has revealed clues about a life cut short by a traumatic incident. The woman’s elongated, cone-shaped cranium, a result of intentional cranial modification, bore a distinctive triangular fracture, suggesting a fatal blow from a broad-edged object. Yet, whether this was an act of murder or a tragic accident remains a mystery.

The discovery was detailed in a study published on May 22 in the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology by Mahdi Alirezazadeh and Hamed Vahdati Nasab, archaeologists from Tarbiat Modares University in Iran. “We know this woman experienced the fracture in the final moments of her life, but we don’t have direct evidence to say that someone intentionally struck her,” Alirezazadeh told Live Science in an email. The uncertainty surrounding her death has left researchers both intrigued and puzzled.
Chega Sofla, occupied between approximately 4700 and 3700 B.C., offers a window into a vibrant period in human history. “People had temples, belief systems, and large buildings and structures,” Alirezazadeh explained. Toward the end of this era, the region saw the emergence of writing and the beginnings of urbanization. The site itself is notable for its pioneering brick tomb constructions, among the oldest in the world, and includes both individual and communal graves, possibly family tombs.
The young woman, identified as BG1.12, was one of several individuals at Chega Sofla with artificially modified skulls. This practice, known as cranial bandaging, involved wrapping a child’s growing skull with fabric over many years to create an elongated, cone-shaped head. Such modifications were not uncommon at the site, where both modified and unmodified skulls were found buried together. However, the woman’s skull stood out due to a prominent triangular fracture extending from the front to the left side of her head.

Using advanced CT scans, Alirezazadeh and Nasab examined the skull’s structure, revealing that the cranial bones and the diploe—the spongy layer within bones that absorbs shock—were thinner than normal. This thinning, a consequence of cranial modification, likely made her skull more vulnerable to injury. “An intense force delivered by an object with a wide edge impacted the skull of this young woman during her final moments,” the researchers wrote. While the blow was severe enough to fracture even an unmodified skull, the weakened structure of her cranium may have exacerbated the damage.
The ambiguity of the injury’s cause—whether intentional or accidental—has left scientists stunned. “It should be noted that the blow was so severe that it would have fractured a normal, unmodified skull as well,” Alirezazadeh emphasized. Another fractured skull, this one unmodified, was also found at Chega Sofla, suggesting that such injuries were not exclusive to those with altered crania. This raises further questions about the circumstances surrounding these violent incidents.
The woman’s remains were found in a communal grave, complicating efforts to identify the rest of her skeleton and limiting further insights into her final moments. The Zohreh Prehistoric Project, led by archaeologist Abbas Moghaddam, has been excavating Chega Sofla for over a decade, uncovering not only this enigmatic skeleton but also more than a dozen other elongated skulls. These findings highlight the cultural practice of cranial modification and its prevalence in this ancient community.
The discovery of this young woman’s skull, with its chilling evidence of a fatal blow, underscores the complexities of life in the Copper Age. Was she a victim of violence, or did an accident claim her life? The answers remain elusive, leaving archaeologists to ponder the untold stories of Chega Sofla’s ancient inhabitants.
