MIDAS, a cutting-edge system designed to monitor the Moon for impact events, played a pivotal role in documenting this extraordinary moment. Equipped with telescopes and sensitive video cameras, MIDAS scans the Moon’s surface, particularly during periods when its darker regions provide high contrast for spotting flashes. “We monitor the nocturnal region of the Moon to identify impact flashes,” Madiedo explained to Gizmodo. “During lunar eclipses, the lunar ground is dark, making these flashes stand out vividly.”

The system’s software analyzes footage in real time, pinpointing the exact location of impacts. In this case, it revealed that a small asteroid, estimated to weigh around 10 kilograms, had struck the Moon’s surface, creating a brief but brilliant flash visible to those watching the eclipse.
