In a shocking incident that has sent ripples of outrage through Florida and beyond, a 26-year-old man, Zane Garrett, was arrested Thursday for brutally stabbing a bull shark in a viral Snapchat video that has ignited fierce debate over animal cruelty. The gruesome footage, titled “Bud broke my rod,” captured Garrett knifing the shark repeatedly near a wreck site off Key West on May 22, an act he later chillingly described as “revenge” for the shark stealing his catch.
Garrett, who had been listed as a captain on the website of Second Nature Charters, found himself in hot water after an anonymous tipster, horrified by the video, alerted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The tipster cited “safety concerns” and condemned the blatant act of cruelty, pointing authorities directly to Garrett. “Yes, to weapons for the 9-11 inch filet knife, yes to violent behavior for stabbing a shark repeatedly, yes to being concerned over them being dumb enough to post themselves committing a crime,” the tipster stated in their report to the FWC.
When confronted with the damning footage, Garrett didn’t flinch. “Yah, that’s me,” he admitted to authorities, defending his actions as a common tactic to deter sharks from stealing fish. He claimed stabbing the bull shark was meant to scare off others, but his justification took a darker turn when he confessed the act was fueled by vengeance. According to the arrest warrant cited by Local 10, Garrett admitted the shark “had stolen his fish and was a nuisance,” prompting him to stab it multiple times.
