Mark Robinson, a professor at Arizona State University’s School of Earth and Space Exploration and principal investigator for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC), confirmed the spacecraft was struck yet continued its mission uninterrupted. “LROC was struck and survived to keep exploring the moon,” Robinson stated. He attributed the event to a small natural meteorite, noting that the meteoroid was “travelling much faster than a speeding bullet.” In a memorable turn of phrase, Robinson added: “In this case, LROC did not dodge a speeding bullet, but rather survived a speeding bullet!”

NASA officials emphasized that the impact posed no risk to the instrument’s long-term health or operational safety. John Keller, LRO project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, explained the agency’s decision to release details years later: “Since the impact presented no technical problems for the health and safety of the instrument, the team is only now announcing this event as a fascinating example of how engineering data can be used, in ways not previously anticipated, to understand what is happening to the spacecraft over 236,000 miles from the Earth.”

For many observers, the story ends there—an impressive demonstration of spacecraft resilience and the value of detailed telemetry. However, the incident has drawn intense scrutiny from UFO enthusiasts and lunar anomaly researchers who routinely examine LRO imagery for signs of artificial structures. Some have long claimed the probe has captured evidence of hidden alien bases on the Moon, and the glitch-induced jagged images have only added fuel to those theories.

While such interpretations persist in online forums and dedicated communities, NASA maintains that the most straightforward and evidence-based explanation is a natural micrometeoroid strike.
