Catastrophic Impact Imminent? ‘City-Killer’ Asteroid on Collision Course with the Moon!

In a cosmic twist that had astronomers holding their breath, NASA has officially declared Earth safe from the threat of asteroid 2024 YR4, a so-called “city-killer” that briefly loomed as a potential danger. After two months of meticulous observations, scientists have downgraded the space rock’s chances of striking our planet to a mere 0.0017%, according to the Associated Press. The European Space Agency is even more optimistic, pegging the odds at a negligible 0.001%. For now, Earth can breathe a sigh of relief—this asteroid is set to harmlessly zip past us in 2032 and poses no threat for at least the next century.

“This is exactly the outcome we anticipated, though we couldn’t be entirely certain until now,” said Paul Chodas, head of NASA’s Center for Near Earth Objects Studies (CNEOS). The announcement marks a dramatic turnaround from just a week ago when 2024 YR4, a rock measuring between 131 and 295 feet in diameter, carried a 1.5% chance of slamming into Earth. At its peak risk a day earlier, the odds spiked to a nerve-wracking 3.1%—or 1 in 32—making it the most dangerous asteroid tracked since NASA’s Sentry Risk Table was established over a decade ago.

The stakes were high. A collision with YR4 could have unleashed a devastating energy blast equivalent to 8 megatons of TNT—500 times the power of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Such an impact could have endangered hundreds of millions of lives, leveling cities and causing widespread destruction. Fortunately, scientists had predicted this rollercoaster of probabilities, noting that initial risk estimates often surge before dropping as more data refines the asteroid’s trajectory.

While Earth dodges this cosmic bullet, the moon might not be so lucky. NASA has raised concerns about a 1.7% chance that YR4 could strike our celestial neighbor, a significant jump from earlier predictions. Unlike Earth, the moon lacks an atmosphere to shield it, meaning an impact would occur at a blistering 30,000 miles per hour, carving out a crater between 1,640 and 6,500 feet wide. However, Chodas remains cautiously optimistic, suggesting that further observations could reduce the lunar impact risk to negligible levels, just as they did for Earth.

To better understand this interstellar visitor, NASA plans to deploy the James Webb Space Telescope, the most powerful observatory ever built, to determine YR4’s exact size before it slips out of view in the coming months. This close encounter, while nerve-racking, has proven a golden opportunity for astronomers. “Though 2024 YR4 no longer poses a significant threat to Earth, it has given us a rare chance to study a near-Earth object up close,” NASA said in a statement.

This cosmic scare serves as a reminder of the dynamic and unpredictable nature of our solar system. While Earth is safe for now, the moon’s fate hangs in the balance, and the universe continues to keep scientists on their toes.
