CLOSE RUN FIN: Surfer Rides Wave Over Hidden Shark as Terrifying Footage Reveals Just How Close Disaster Came

Byron Bay, Australia – A group of surfers had a remarkably narrow escape after a five-foot shark swam undetected within inches of their boards, captured in dramatic footage by an American tourist looking down from the cliffs above.

The close encounter unfolded on Tuesday at one of Australia’s most popular surfing destinations on the New South Wales East Coast. Derik Broshar, from Iowa, was observing the waves when he spotted the shark making its way directly toward a group of surfers paddling and riding small waves near the shore.

In the video, the shark can be seen casually gliding through the water, passing just metres from several surfers. At one point, an oblivious surfer catches a wave and rides directly over the predator, which had been circling the group undetected for approximately a minute. The shark eventually swam away without incident.

Broshar and other onlookers attempted to alert the surfers by whistling and shouting, but strong winds made it difficult for their warnings to carry.

“We were looking down at all the surfers having a good time, and we saw this shark,” Mr Broshar told The Northern Star. “There were a few guys trying to whistle down but it was a little windy so you couldn’t really hear us from that far up.”

The surfers eventually noticed the shark and exited the water safely. According to Broshar, the group later learned the shark had been seen in the same area again that day, prompting more surfers to leave the ocean.

While no one was injured, the incident highlights the constant risks surfers face in these waters. Local authorities have promised to install shark nets in the area following a series of attacks along the East Coast over the past 18 months.

The footage, obtained by news.com.au, serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a leisurely surf session can turn dangerous. Despite the shark’s proximity, the calm behaviour of the animal – believed to be a smaller species, likely a juvenile bull or similar – meant disaster was avoided this time.

Byron Bay remains a world-renowned surfing mecca, but beachgoers are being reminded to remain vigilant, especially in areas with recent shark activity.
