In a harrowing encounter that underscores the raw power of nature and the limits of human resilience, bricklayer Joe Petrovich survived a ten-minute ordeal with a massive 15-foot great white shark after being stalked and attacked while spearfishing off Western Australia’s coast.
The incident unfolded near Burns Beach in the Marmion Marine Park, a popular diving destination known for its clear shallow lagoons, reefs, and rich marine life. Petrovich, who was diving alone approximately 250 meters from his small boat, initially noticed the predator circling him slowly. What began as cautious observation quickly escalated into a calculated pursuit that tested the diver’s survival instincts to their core.
For ten terrifying minutes, the shark methodically stalked Petrovich as he swam desperately toward the safety of his vessel. The predator, nearly larger than the boat itself, refused to relent, approaching from multiple angles — left, right, and from beneath — in what appeared to be a deliberate search for vulnerability.
“I could have put my fist down its throat it was that close,” Petrovich later recounted. “I was s*** scared. I mean how would you be? I think I’m going to lose one leg and I might lose the bottom half of the other one as well.”
As the shark closed in for the kill, Petrovich made his one desperate move: he thrust his fishing spear directly into the shark’s head. The strike momentarily drove the predator away, but the battle was far from over. The great white soon returned with renewed aggression, biting off part of the Australian’s flipper as it lunged toward his foot.
“You’ve only got one shot… it’s very hard to kill an animal that big,” Petrovich said. “If you wound it you are only going to make it angrier.”
The shark continued its pursuit all the way back to the boat, stalking Petrovich and probing his defenses. “It was following me, it was pretty much stalking me all the way back, trying to find a weakness in my defence,” he explained. “It was doing basically what it does all the time…. It was just looking for a feed. I just wish it wasn’t me.”
Petrovich’s companions, who were spearfishing nearby in pursuit of snapper, remained completely unaware of the life-or-death struggle unfolding just meters away. Even after he reached the boat, the shark lingered in the area for another ten minutes before the group made a swift escape to shore.
The encounter highlights both the unpredictable dangers faced by those who venture into these waters and the remarkable composure required to survive them. Fisheries officers have since requested photographs of the shark from the divers to confirm its species and size. In response to the incident, Surf Life Saving WA deployed helicopter patrols to monitor the area for potential threats.
Marmion Marine Park is frequently described by Parks and Wildlife authorities as a “diver’s paradise,” featuring intricate ledges, caves, and swim-throughs teeming with fish and invertebrates. Yet, as Petrovich’s story dramatically illustrates, this underwater realm remains a domain where humans are visitors — and sometimes prey — in a predator’s natural hunting ground.
Petrovich’s narrow escape serves as a sobering reminder of the respect demanded by Australia’s coastal waters and the razor-thin margin between survival and tragedy when facing one of the ocean’s most formidable apex predators.
