MONTEREY BAY, California — A kayaker had a miraculous escape after a massive great white shark attacked his small vessel, flipping the kayak, seizing it in its powerful jaws, and stalking the terrified paddler in the water before a dramatic Coast Guard rescue.

The unnamed man was paddling in his single-seater kayak off the coast of Monterey Bay when the giant predator struck. In a heart-stopping instant, the shark overturned the tiny boat, leaving the kayaker stranded and treading water.

Dramatic footage of the close encounter, captured in March, was released this week by local witness Gene Mace, who observed the entire ordeal from the shoreline alongside his wife.
“He and his wife watched as the giant shark slowly edged towards the kayaker – now treading water – with the pink boat still in its mouth,” Mace’s account described.
In a moment of sheer panic, the exhausted paddler frantically waved his arms in the air, desperately trying to attract attention from the shore. The shark continued its menacing approach, closing to within just a few yards of the terrified man before finally slipping beneath the surface and disappearing.

Fortunately, a U.S. Coast Guard boat raced to the scene to assist the stranded kayaker. By the time rescuers arrived, the man was so physically drained from the terrifying ordeal that he lacked the strength to pull himself aboard the vessel.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the raw power and unpredictability of the ocean’s apex predators in the waters around Monterey Bay, a region known for its significant great white shark population. For the kayaker, what began as a routine paddle turned into a life-or-death struggle — one he survived thanks to quick-thinking witnesses and a timely rescue.
Thanks to the released footage, viewers can now witness the harrowing moments that nearly ended in tragedy — a story of survival against one of nature’s most formidable hunters.
