NFL UPDATE: K. Rourke Sidelined as 49ers, Chargers Navigate MAJOR Injuries Ahead of Preseason Showdown

As the NFL preseason rolls into another Thursday night doubleheader, the focus shifts west to Los Angeles, where the Chargers host the San Francisco 49ers. Both California contenders entered the offseason with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, yet a cascade of injuries is forcing recalibrations just weeks before the regular season. Third-string quarterback Kurtis Rourke’s absence only adds another layer of uncertainty for a 49ers roster already navigating significant absences.

Back in March, both Los Angeles-based teams stood out as primed for improvement. The Rams dominated the offseason with high-profile additions and emerged as Super Bowl favorites. The Chargers operated more quietly but still upgraded key areas—most notably on the offensive line. Their biggest free-agent splash was center Tyler Biadasz, signed to a three-year, $30 million deal. That optimism took a major hit on Tuesday when Biadasz suffered significant damage to his ACL and additional injuries to his left knee during a joint practice against the 49ers. He is out indefinitely and will seek further medical opinions, leaving the Chargers potentially turning to second-round rookie Jake Slaughter.

The line concerns do not end there. Right tackle Rashawn Slater, who became the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history a year ago before a season-ending injury, has experienced a “little” flare-up in his surgically repaired left knee. He has not practiced since last Thursday, and there is no clear indication he will be ready for the Week 1 opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Left tackle Joe Alt’s own injury history last season—limited to just four full games, all Chargers wins—underscores how critical healthy bookends remain.

Los Angeles faces a brutal early schedule. After home games against Arizona and the Raiders, the Chargers confront a stretch from Week 3 through Week 12 in which eight of nine opponents rank among the top 12 Super Bowl contenders at FanDuel. Improved offensive line play will be essential if they hope to weather that gauntlet. With Biadasz likely sidelined and Slater’s status murky, expectations for the Bolts may need tempering.

Across the bay, the 49ers are dealing with their own preseason setbacks. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall will miss the season. Tight end George Kittle remains on the PUP list as he recovers from a torn Achilles, though he continues to express hope of boarding the flight to Australia for the regular-season opener against the Rams on Sept. 10. Running back Christian McCaffrey has been sidelined by hamstring and calf tightness; head coach Kyle Shanahan has dismissed any suggestion that the absences are contract-related.

San Francisco also sits behind the Super Bowl-favorite Rams and defending-champion Seahawks in a loaded NFC West. A veteran roster carrying multiple notable injury concerns already makes the 49ers a less appealing long-term wager than the Chargers in some analysts’ eyes. At FanDuel, the Chargers at +1700 currently edge the 49ers at +1900 as the better Super Bowl value, though both face legitimate durability questions over a 17-game grind.

Tonight’s preseason matchup adds another subplot. Kurtis Rourke—brother of BC Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke—is dealing with a chest injury and will miss the game. Brock Purdy is expected to start, but Shanahan and the coaching staff are unlikely to risk healthy veterans extensively with McCaffrey and Kittle already sidelined. That opens the door for fourth-stringer Adrian Martinez to see significant second-half snaps. Rourke had shown promise last week, completing 12-of-14 passes for 101 yards and adding 14 rushing yards against the Titans.

The Chargers, meanwhile, are expected to give Justin Herbert a series or two before turning the offense over to Trey Lance and DJ Uiagalelei. That tandem orchestrated a 27-7 win over the Texans in Week 1 of the preseason, with Lance throwing for 167 yards and rushing for 27 more. Lance, the former third-overall pick of the 49ers in 2021, gets another opportunity to audition against his old team.

The line opened with the Chargers as 1.5-point favorites but has flipped to San Francisco -1.5 after confirmation that Purdy will start. Given the 49ers’ injury list and Rourke’s absence, the bulk of second-half work for San Francisco may fall to Martinez. Lance and Uiagalelei already proved capable of putting up points; that combination should generate enough production to secure another preseason victory.

Both franchises remain intriguing, yet the early injury toll—especially along the Chargers’ offensive line and across San Francisco’s skill positions—serves as a reminder that contention in the modern NFL often hinges as much on health as talent. Tonight’s game offers another look at the depth pieces who may be asked to step up sooner than planned.
