In a harrowing incident that highlights the unpredictable dangers of the ocean, Texan dentist Dr. Steven Cuthbirth found himself in a life-or-death struggle with a six-foot bull shark during what was supposed to be a relaxing spearfishing trip with his son-in-law in the Bahamas.
The terrifying encounter occurred as Cuthbirth and his son-in-law were diving near the surface. Without warning, the powerful bull shark swam directly into them, launching a sudden and ferocious attack that left the dentist with deep lacerations to his face and leg.
Cuthbirth later recounted the moment of impact with vivid clarity: “As I neared the surface, all of a sudden it was as if a football linebacker had crashed into the right side of my head.” He described the force as feeling like being struck by an “18-wheeler truck.”
In the chaos, the dentist caught sight of the shark’s open mouth and rows of razor-sharp teeth just inches from his face. Acting on instinct, he released the spear and fish he was holding and struck the shark forcefully with the back of his right arm and the spear handle, hitting it squarely on the side of its head.
The blow momentarily repelled the predator, but it triggered a biting frenzy. The shark returned with renewed aggression, slamming into Cuthbirth’s side and right leg as it searched for the speared fish. He kicked it away with his fin and urgently swam to the surface, reaching the safety of a nearby boat.
Photographs shared by Dr. Cuthbirth on Facebook reveal the shocking extent of the injuries. Deep bite marks on his snorkel, including a visible tear near the base, demonstrate just how close the shark came to causing catastrophic damage to his eyes. He sustained gruesome cuts above his dive mask on his forehead, through his upper right lip and cheek below the mask, as well as significant bites on his right knee (on both sides of the kneecap) and right outer thigh.
Remarkably, Cuthbirth credits his dive mask and the knife strapped to his right leg with preventing even more severe tissue loss. Despite the ordeal, the dentist maintained a positive outlook, posting: “All in all, no complaints – a very lucky person. All men should have a few well placed scars on their face, don’t you think?”
He was promptly transported to a hospital where he received treatment for the multiple lacerations to his face and lips. Thankfully, he has since made a good recovery.
Bull sharks are widely regarded as one of the most dangerous shark species to humans due to their aggressive nature, ability to thrive in both saltwater and freshwater, and proximity to coastal areas. Along with great whites and tiger sharks, they account for the majority of documented shark attacks worldwide.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks inherent in ocean activities, even for experienced divers. While shark encounters remain statistically rare, the power and unpredictability of these apex predators demand constant vigilance and respect for marine environments.
Dr. Cuthbirth’s composure and quick thinking in the face of such a traumatic event are commendable, turning what could have been a tragedy into a story of survival and resilience.
