Named Adalatherium, meaning “crazy beast” in Malagasy and Greek, this opossum-sized creature lived alongside dinosaurs and massive crocodiles on the fourth largest island on Earth. The finding, published in the journal Nature, reveals a nearly complete skeleton—the most intact Mesozoic mammal skeleton ever found in the southern hemisphere. Co-authors include Dr. James B. A Mammal That Defies Expectations
Adalatherium is a biological enigma, with a skeleton described as “outlandish” by Dr. Krause. While its outward appearance might resemble a modern badger, its skeletal structure breaks many evolutionary rules. The mammal boasts primitive features, such as a septomaxilla bone in its snout, unseen in the lineage leading to modern mammals for over 100 million years. Its nasal cavity is a mosaic of typical mammalian traits and unique characteristics never observed before, according to Dr. Rossie. The creature’s face had more foramina—holes for nerves and blood vessels—than any known mammal, suggesting a highly sensitive, whisker-covered snout. A particularly baffling feature is a large hole on top of its snout with no known parallel in any living or extinct mammal.

The peculiarities don’t end there. Adalatherium’s teeth differ vastly from those of any other known mammal, and its backbone contains more vertebrae than any other Mesozoic mammal. One of its leg bones is strangely curved, adding to the mystery of how it moved. At the size of a Virginia opossum, Adalatherium was unusually large for its time, as most mammals living alongside dinosaurs were typically mouse-sized.
A Lost Lineage: The Gondwanatherians
Adalatherium belongs to an extinct group of mammals called gondwanatherians, known only from the ancient southern supercontinent of Gondwana. Fossils of these creatures have been found in Argentina, Africa, India, the Antarctic Peninsula, and Madagascar since the 1980s. Initially thought to be related to modern sloths, anteaters, and armadillos, gondwanatherians are now recognized as a unique evolutionary experiment that thrived in isolation but went extinct around 45 million years ago during the Eocene. Until Adalatherium’s discovery, gondwanatherians were primarily known from isolated teeth, jaw fragments, and a single cranium from Madagascar described by Krause’s team in 2014.
An Island of Evolutionary Oddities
The bizarre nature of Adalatherium is closely tied to Madagascar’s geological history. Around 100 million years ago, Madagascar, then attached to the Indian subcontinent, separated from Africa. By 88 million years ago, it became fully isolated as an island when the Indian subcontinent drifted northward. This isolation allowed Adalatherium’s lineage to evolve independently for over 20 million years, resulting in its extraordinary features. As Dr. Krause notes, this prolonged isolation provided “ample time to develop its many ludicrous features.”

Despite its well-preserved skeleton, Adalatherium remains a puzzle. Dr. Simone Hoffmann of the New York Institute of Technology, a primary collaborator, remarked that the animal is “the oddest of oddballs.” Its front and back ends seem to tell conflicting stories about its movement, making it difficult to determine whether it was a powerful digger, a runner, or capable of other forms of locomotion.
A Window into the Southern Hemisphere’s Past
The discovery of Adalatherium is a significant piece in the puzzle of early mammalian evolution in the southern hemisphere, where the fossil record is far less complete than in the northern hemisphere. Dr. Krause emphasizes that while Adalatherium provides critical insights, many gaps remain. Madagascar: A Hotbed of Bizarre Creatures

Krause’s team has uncovered other extraordinary fossils on the island over the past 25 years, including a giant predatory frog (Beelzebufo), a vegetarian crocodile (Simosuchus), and a buck-toothed dinosaur (Masiakasaurus). Today, Madagascar hosts an array of endemic species, from hissing cockroaches to lemurs, made famous by the Madagascar animated films. Just a few thousand years ago, the island was home to 1400-pound elephant birds, gorilla-sized lemurs, and pygmy hippopotamuses.

The research team behind Adalatherium’s discovery includes experts from institutions worldwide, such as the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the University of Louisville, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Université d’Antananarivo, among others.
