A 24-year-old female student tragically lost her life after falling more than 330 feet (over 100 meters) from a rocky ledge while attempting to take photographs at a popular tourist viewpoint in Russia’s Irkutsk region.

The incident occurred on Sunday at the White Cliffs near the city of Usolye-Sibirskoye, a scenic area close to the Belaya River known for attracting hikers and visitors. According to a regional branch of Russia’s Investigative Committee, the woman had climbed onto a ledge to capture what she hoped would be the perfect photo before attempting to descend.
As she made her way back down, the ground beneath her suddenly gave way, sending her plummeting from the cliff. She sustained severe injuries in the fall and was pronounced dead en route to the hospital while being transported by ambulance.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident. Witnesses are being interviewed, and officials are still determining whether a criminal case will be opened.
The White Cliffs have long been regarded as a picturesque yet potentially hazardous tourist spot. The young woman’s death highlights the inherent risks of venturing too close to unstable edges in search of striking images, a growing concern in the age of social media where the pursuit of the ideal selfie can overshadow safety considerations.
This latest tragedy adds to a troubling pattern of similar fatal falls in Russia in recent years. In April, a local resident in Sochi died after falling from a viewing platform on a cliffside. Another incident involved a 24-year-old female caver who fell while climbing down in Dragon’s Mouth cave near the Adler district. Last year, a 21-year-old tourist died in the mountains near Lake Baikal after attempting to leap across a crevice.
These incidents serve as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by Russia’s dramatic natural landscapes. While offering breathtaking views, sites like the White Cliffs demand caution, proper footwear, and respect for marked boundaries—precautions that, when overlooked, can turn a memorable outing into a fatal one.
The Investigative Committee continues to examine the evidence as the young woman’s family and friends mourn her loss.
