An exhausted puppy lay on one of the streets of Kolkata, India. At first glance, she looked no different from the hundreds of other stray dogs roaming the city — except for one heartbreaking detail: her back legs were tightly wrapped in stiff, dirty bandages, completely immobilized.
Someone had clearly tried to help her on their own, but without the resources to take her to a veterinarian. Thankfully, before it was too late, the right person crossed her path.
Found Dragging Herself Through the Street
The small dog was discovered struggling along the road, painfully dragging her bound hind legs behind her. When a kind passerby stopped to help, it quickly became clear that simply immobilizing her legs had done nothing to address the real cause of her suffering.
The puppy was in terrifying condition. She had likely been attacked by a much larger dog or injured in a traffic accident. Beneath the filthy bandages, her wounds were infested with parasites, and one of the injuries had become severely infected. Her body was inflamed, raw, and deteriorating.
She was alone. No one was caring for her. And without intervention, she likely would not have survived.
A Race Against Time
The rescuer gently lifted the injured puppy and rushed her to a veterinary clinic. There, the staff immediately began treatment. The dog was given the name Scooter, and doctors focused on treating her damaged hind legs and infected wounds.
Once her injuries were cleaned and stabilized — and she regained enough strength — Scooter underwent surgery. What followed was a long, exhausting recovery.
But neither the veterinary team nor Scooter herself gave up.
She was surrounded by patience, care, and love. Despite everything she had endured, her gratitude was visible almost immediately. With each passing day, she grew stronger — physically and emotionally.
From Scooter to Dobby — A New Life Begins
Scooter was cared for over many months by Alexandra Gade, who helped nurse her back to health and prepared her for adoption. Eventually, the once-abandoned street dog was transported from India to the United States, where she found a forever home in Virginia with a loving family.
With the adoption came a fresh start — and even a new name.
Her new family renamed her Dobby (known in Polish as Zgredek), a name that perfectly suits her appearance — especially her large, upright ears. While scars from her past remain, they are now only reminders of how far she has come.
