Now, as the water lingers, something extraordinary is happening—Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre is blushing a surreal peachy pink.

This isn’t your average lake. Known as the world’s largest ephemeral lake, according to Guinness World Records, it only holds water temporarily, teasing visitors with its fleeting beauty before vanishing into the desert once more. The recent deluge has locals buzzing with speculation: could this be one of those rare moments when the lake fills to capacity? It’s only happened three times in the last 160 years, with the last full fill in 1974, says South Australia’s Department for Environment and Water. While partial fills occur more often, a brimming Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre is a once-in-a-generation spectacle.

National Parks and Wildlife Service District Ranger Travis Gotch isn’t betting on a full fill this time. Speaking to ABC News, he predicts the lake will reach depths similar to the 2010 floods—about a couple of meters deep, enough to linger for six to twelve months, depending on the summer’s heat. But whether it reaches capacity or not, the real magic is yet to come.

As an endorheic lake, Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre doesn’t let its water escape through rivers or streams. Instead, it surrenders to the sun, evaporating slowly into the sky. As the water dwindles, salinity spikes, creating a playground for salt-loving microorganisms. These tiny residents are the masterminds behind the lake’s eerie glow. Their pink-red pigments, embedded in their cell membranes, paint the water in shades of peachy pink, turning the lake into a surreal, otherworldly canvas.

This phenomenon isn’t unique to Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. Microscopic life can transform waters into a kaleidoscope of colors, from the rainbow hues of Yellowstone National Park’s Grand Prismatic Spring to vibrant blooms elsewhere. But when these microorganisms flourish in waters that sustain millions, their beauty can turn problematic. For now, though, Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre’s fleeting pink glow is a breathtaking reminder of nature’s ability to surprise and captivate—here one day, gone the next, leaving only whispers of its strange, glowing glory.
