The 49ers Are Preparing for the Worst – Pearsall’s Injury Prompts 3 WR Tryouts

49ers Work Out Three Wide Receivers Amid Ricky Pearsall Knee Concern

On the heels of Ricky Pearsall’s likely missing some time with knee swelling, the San Francisco 49ers worked out three wide receivers, per the NFL’s transaction wire:

  • WR Alex Bachman
  • WR De’Wayne Eskridge
  • WR Trenton Irwin

Player Profiles

Bachman, listed at 6’0”, 190 pounds, was with the Raiders in 2025. The 30-year-old caught two passes for 12 yards with Vegas last year and had three receptions for 31 yards in 2024. Bachman was an undrafted free agent out of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Eskridge is a name that should sound familiar. He was a second-round draft pick by the Seahawks back in 2021. Eskridge spent the previous two seasons in Mike McDaniel’s offense. He’s totaled seven receptions for 106 yards during that time. Eskridge is on the smaller side, at 5’9”, 190 pounds.

Irwin is the biggest of the three, at 6’2”, 200 pounds. Irwin went to Stanford, where he was an undrafted free agent out of the 2019 NFL Draft as well. Irwin’s entire career was with the Bengals. He last recorded a statistic in 2024. The majority of Irwin’s production came in 2022 and 2023. Irwin combined for 40 receptions and 547 receiving yards in those two seasons. His season-high was 34 receiving yards in three other seasons.

Context

The workouts come as the 49ers deal with early training camp injuries, including Pearsall’s knee swelling, running back Jordan James’ fractured ribs, and safety Malik Mustapha’s hamstring strain. Adding depth at wide receiver is a prudent step while the team evaluates its current options.

Final Thoughts

The 49ers are taking a proactive approach by working out Alex Bachman, De’Wayne Eskridge and Trenton Irwin following concerns over Ricky Pearsall’s knee. While none of the three are high-profile names, they offer potential depth and competition as San Francisco navigates another injury-affected training camp. Whether any of them earn a contract will depend on how the current receiver room performs in the coming days.
