We hoped they might do the same on Mars.”

After three years and 1,000 days of relentless exploration, Perseverance has pieced together a vivid timeline of Jezero’s watery history, revealing three distinct phases. First, fine sand and mud, perfect for entombing fossilized life, settled into the crater. Then, as the lake swelled to a staggering 22 miles across and 100 feet deep, it deposited layers of sediment. Finally, powerful rivers surged through, dragging boulders across the Martian landscape, reshaping the terrain.

“We could see the rough sketch of Jezero’s story from orbit,” said Libby Ives, a post-doctoral fellow at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. “But it was Perseverance’s up-close investigation that brought the details into focus, like reading the fine print of an ancient novel.”

Clues to Ancient Life

Perseverance has collected 23 rock samples from Jezero, each the size of a stick of chalk, carefully drilled and sealed in specialized metal tubes. Among these, two samples stand out as tantalizing clues to Mars’ past. One is rich in silica, a mineral renowned on Earth for preserving fossils. The other contains a significant amount of phosphate—a cornerstone of life, found in DNA and cell membranes. These discoveries have scientists buzzing with excitement.

“Water once carried clay minerals into Jezero’s lake, creating conditions where microbial life could have thrived,” NASA’s website explains. “If life existed during these wet periods, its remnants might be locked in the lakebed or shoreline sediments.” The rover’s instruments, capable of detecting microscopic fossil-like structures and chemical signatures of ancient microbes, have yet to confirm such evidence. But the presence of carbonates, phosphates, and silica—ingredients of a habitable environment—has researchers like Morgan Cable, a scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, optimistic. “These are ideal conditions for preserving signs of ancient life,” she said. “We’re standing on the edge of a breakthrough.”

A Geologic Time Machine

Perseverance has also revealed that Jezero’s floor is made of igneous rock, born from magma or volcanic activity deep beneath the surface. Above this foundation lie layers of sandstone and mudstone, markers of the rivers that once fed the lake. The mudstone, rich in salt, points to periods of evaporation, painting a picture of a dynamic, ever-changing environment.

With its advanced suite of tools, Perseverance continues to probe the Martian terrain, analyzing rocks for signs of life that may have vanished billions of years ago. While no definitive fossils or microbial traces have been found yet, each sample brings scientists closer to unraveling Mars’ secrets.
