Guillaume Pierrel: French Ski Mountaineer Dies in Avalanche on K6, Karakoram
French mountain guide and ski mountaineer Guillaume Pierrel has died aged 42 after being caught in an avalanche while attempting K6 (7,282 m) in Pakistan’s Karakoram range.
The accident occurred at approximately 5,000 meters on June 24, 2026, during an expedition in the Hushe Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan. His French teammate Boris Jule and Swiss climber Christina Maria survived the avalanche. Recovery efforts for Pierrel’s body were launched by local authorities and volunteers.
1. A Life Dedicated to the Mountains
Born in France’s Vosges region, Pierrel grew up on skis and dedicated his life to the mountains. A certified mountain guide based in Chamonix, he became known for his bold blend of steep skiing, alpine climbing, and endurance sports.
His projects took him across the Andes, the Alps, and the Karakoram, where he pursued lightweight, technical ascents and ambitious ski descents. He also competed in ultra-endurance events, including the UTMB (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc), and took part in high-altitude skyrunning on Lenin Peak.
2. A Major Eight-Thousander Achievement
Among his finest achievements was the successful ascent and ski descent of Gasherbrum II (8,035 m) in 2021 with a French team, accomplished in alpine style after an exceptionally fast climb. Pakistan became one of his favorite climbing destinations, returning repeatedly in search of new lines and unexplored objectives.
His passion for skiing the world’s highest peaks earned him widespread respect within the international ski mountaineering community.
3. The Final Expedition
This summer, Pierrel returned to Pakistan with hopes of climbing K6, one of the Karakoram’s most elegant and demanding 7,000-meter peaks. The expedition ended in tragedy when an avalanche swept across the mountain during the team’s ascent.
His death is a profound loss to the global mountaineering community, which remembers him as a gifted alpinist, skier, and a climber driven by curiosity, humility, and a love for the mountains.
