The Crimes and Execution of Otto Moll: The Sadistic Head of Auschwitz Crematoria

Otto Moll, an SS officer at Auschwitz, became one of the most notorious figures for his direct involvement in mass killings and turning the camp’s crematoria into sites of industrialized murder and personal brutality. Rising to the rank of Oberscharführer, Moll oversaw the crematoria operations and firing squads, personally participating in gassings and executions. His actions epitomized the mechanized horror of the “Final Solution.”

1. Rise as Crematoria Chief

Moll arrived at Auschwitz in 1941 and quickly took charge of the crematoria and burial details. He was responsible for the disposal of bodies and the smooth running of the extermination process as the camp scaled up its killing capacity.

2. The Unforgivable Horrors: Direct Participation in Mass Murder

Moll was known for:

  • Personally pouring Zyklon B into gas chambers during mass gassings.
  • Leading firing squads for prisoners too weak or resistant for the chambers.
  • Brutal treatment of Sonderkommando (prisoner workers forced to handle bodies), including summary executions.
  • Overseeing the burning of bodies in open pits when crematoria were overloaded.

Survivors and post-war investigations described him as enthusiastic and hands-on, often selecting victims himself and showing no emotion while carrying out killings on a daily basis. His role made the crematoria areas literal chambers of ongoing horror.

3. The Flight and Capture

Moll fled Auschwitz during the evacuation in 1945 but was eventually arrested by Allied forces.

4. The Trial and Sickening Fate

He was tried in the Dachau Mauthausen trials and other proceedings related to Auschwitz personnel. Convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity for his direct participation in murders, Moll was sentenced to death.

On May 28, 1946 (or around that period in related trials), Otto Moll was executed by hanging. His death brought a measure of justice for the countless victims whose bodies he had processed in the crematoria.

5. A Historical Lesson

Otto Moll’s case highlights how mid- and low-ranking SS personnel were essential to the scale of the Holocaust. The post-war trials exposed these “ordinary” monsters and helped establish legal precedents against those who directly implement genocidal policies.
