Betty Broderick And The Murder Of Her Ex-Husband: A Story Of A Toxic Divorce That Ended With A Gun

Background: The Marriage And Toxic Divorce

After an unhappy separation turned violent, Betty Broderick now is in prison in California.

Betty Broderick (born Elisabeth Anne Bisceglia, born 1947) married Dan Broderick in 1969. Betty supported her husband through Harvard Law School by teaching and babysitting. After Dan became a successful lawyer earning over one million dollars a year, their outward life was very wealthy: a big house, yacht, luxury cars, country club.

However, the marriage began to seriously crack in 1983 when Dan promoted Linda Kolkena – a 22-year-old secretary with no degree – to be his personal assistant. Betty suspected her husband of having an affair and felt betrayed after years of sacrificing for the family. The divorce was lengthy, contentious, and bitter.

Betty believed that Dan used his money and legal power to “beat” her: he took the house, custody of the children, and made it difficult for her to find a lawyer. Betty reacted by vandalizing his house, driving her car into his front door, and harassing him repeatedly. Dan obtained a restraining order, and Betty was once arrested for carrying a knife.

The divorce was finalized in 1986. Dan married Linda Kolkena in 1989. Betty felt robbed of everything: home, children, money, and status.

The Murders On November 5, 1989

Early in the morning of November 5, 1989, Betty Broderick used her daughter’s key to break into her ex-husband’s mansion at 1041 Cypress Avenue, San Diego.

She crept into the bedroom where Dan and Linda were sleeping.

Linda woke up and screamed for the police.

Betty fired 5 shots: 2 hit Linda, 1 hit Dan.

When Dan tried to reach for the phone, Betty yanked the phone cord out of the wall and left, leaving them both to die.

Betty then voluntarily surrendered at a police station.

The Trial And Sentence

The 1990 trial attracted massive media attention in America. Betty testified that she only wanted to commit suicide in front of the two of them, but panicked when Linda screamed and fired instinctively. She described Dan as controlling and emotionally abusive through money.
However, the prosecutor presented evidence including a recorded call in which Betty once said she wished Dan “dead”. The jury concluded Betty intended to kill.

Betty Broderick was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and received two consecutive life sentences (15 years to life each). She is still serving her sentence at the California Institution for Women in Chino, California. Parole requests have been denied multiple times; the most recent was in 2010, and the next is scheduled for 2032.

Legacy And Social Reaction

The case became an icon of “toxic divorce” and the rage of the abandoned wife. Some public opinion viewed Betty as a victim of betrayal and financial abuse, while the majority saw her as a cold-blooded killer. The story has been adapted into films multiple times, most notably the series Dirty John (season 2) with Amanda Peet playing Betty.

When asked about life in prison, Betty once said: “I’m a lot happier than when I had all that money.”

The Betty Broderick case is a tragic story of a failed marriage that led to deadly violence. Even though Betty felt betrayed and “robbed of everything”, the act of killing Dan and Linda Kolkena is unjustifiable. The case serves as a reminder that no matter how great the suffering, violence is never the solution, and the justice system must still protect human life.
